The spring is here :) Kind of, at least some days ;)
SO, the barefoot trimmer thinks : LAMINITIS !!!
Cold nights with freezing temperatures followed by sunny days will increase the levels of carbohydrates in the grass, especially, but not only, in the spring. So for horses that have a metabolic condition, and/or that come out of the winter overweight, and/or that lack exercise, and/or are on an improper diet, and/or that are left with a long toe / long wall, this new increase of carbohydrates in their diet might be a tipping point heavy of consequences. 😥
The sad truth about laminitis is that, as a barefoot trimmer, there is very little I can do! I can only limit the damage, but I can't solve the problem. Because the problem is the LIFESTYLE, aka the DIET and the EXERCISE.
Laminitis literally means inflammation of the lamina (the glue holding the wall (the nail) and the bone together), or in more practical terms : detachment of the wall (the nail) from the rest of the hoof.
It is caused primarily by a diet too high in carbohydrates and a lack of exercise, and secondarily, by shoeing and wrong trimming practices.
Despite the fact that laminitis is an extremely painful and dangerous condition for your horse, it is very common. Here in Denmark, laminitis is like a epidemic, that we want to prevent at all costs.
Therefore, I share once again the links to these 2 amazing websites where you'll find tons of information about the signs, the causes and the treatment of laminitis.
I hope that helps! 😉
