Unibio

Unibio Unibio is a leading biotechnology company specialising in advanced gas fermentation technology.

Unibio is a leading Danish biotechnology company with core competences within fermentation technologies. At Unibio our goal is to provide the world with innovative sustainable fermentation solutions to overcome the most pressing challenge of our times: how we can produce more protein in a sustainable way without destroying the planet. In cooperation with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU),

we have developed an innovative and unique technology – the U-Loop® fermentation technology – that adds new, sustainable protein production methods to the traditional food value chain. The concept is based on converting natural gas (methane) into a highly concentrated protein product, Uniprotein®, by bacterial fermentation. Uniprotein® can be used as a direct supplement in feed for all animals and fish. We are committed to a journey towards a world without protein scarcity.

Another step in expanding the reach of our gas fermentation platform.

We have entered a strategic collaboration with BioVerde Tech LLC to develop scalable, methane-based biomanufacturing processes for sustainable chemicals.

Together, we are combining our patented U-Loop® vertical loop gas fermentation technology with BioVerde's microbial engineering and downstream chemical conversion platforms.

The goal is ambitious. To turn methane into a low-cost, low-carbon feedstock for industrial chemicals, starting with bio-based butadiene, a key building block for synthetic rubber and engineering plastics like ABS.

"By partnering with BioVerde and leveraging their expertise in developing high-performance microbial strains, we can expand the application of our technology beyond protein production into a broader portfolio of sustainable chemicals," says David Henstrom, CEO at Unibio.

The work will begin across laboratory, demonstration, and pilot scale to systematically de-risk scale-up and support future commercial manufacturing.

We aim to demonstrate a new generation of gas-based biomanufacturing processes that can transform methane into sustainable chemical products.

World’s largest single-cell protein plant coming to Saudi Arabia!

We have formed a joint venture with the Saudi Industrial Investment Group (SIIG) to build the world’s largest single-cell protein plant in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia. This represents a major milestone in our journey! The facility will use our patented gas fermentation technology to convert natural gas into Uniprotein®.

The plant is designed to produce 50,000 tonnes annually in its first phase, with expansion to more than 300,000 tonnes in the coming years. Construction begins in 2026, with commercialisation expected to start in 2028.

The project has received strong support from a number of related Saudi Government entities and aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 ambitions for food security, industrial diversification, and innovation.

This joint venture builds on our long-term partnership with SIIG and represents a major milestone in bringing industrial-scale fermentation to the global feed market. By producing protein independently of land, climate, and traditional agriculture, we're contributing to a more resilient global food system.

David Henstrom, CEO of Unibio, said: “The world needs innovators who collectively want to find a solution to providing food stability for future generations. We believe that our fermentation technology, which incorporates the most efficient reactor of its kind in gas fermentation, is ideal for Saudi Arabia. We are delighted to join with SIIG as a JV partner to bring industrial scale fermentation to the Kingdom and look forward to working together to address an authentic problem – how to feed a growing population with minimal impact on the planet.”

Our technology goes beyond protein production!

With DKK 24.6 million (EUR 3.3 million) in funding from Innovation Fund Denmark, we are joining forces with our partner in the new Gas2X project to turn industrial waste gases into valuable low-carbon products at scale.

Originally developed for sustainable protein production, our advanced U-Loop® bioreactor technology has broader industrial potential. In Gas2X, we will develop a continuous gas fermentation pilot platform specifically designed for gaseous substrates to create a more energy-efficient and scalable alternative to conventional fermentation systems.

Installed at our Innovation Centre in Kalundborg, the platform will enable the conversion of CO₂, CO, H₂ and methane into low-carbon chemicals and materials. It will also serve as a Carbon Capture and Utilization test site for industries looking to valorise waste gas streams.

The project will help establish a national platform for continuous gas-based biomanufacturing and strengthen Denmark’s position in industrial biotechnology.

“The potential of gas fermentation is enormous, but the lack of scalable solutions has been a major barrier. With this project, we are taking an important step toward making biobased production from waste gases an industrial reality,” says Jens Dynesen, CSO at Unibio A/S.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of Unibio’s founder Ebbe Busch Larsen. Ebbe was a pioneer in biotechnology, founding Unibio in 2001. His foundational work, beginning a decade and a half prior to 2001, has enabled our ability to produce planet-friendly protein for a growing world population.

We are profoundly grateful for his unrelenting focus on laying a solid foundation for Unibio upon which we continue to build and innovate. His legacy is forever etched into Unibio.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Ebbe Busch Larsen's family and loved ones during this difficult time. May they find solace in the memories of his remarkable life, and the indelible mark he left on all of us.

Unibio's initial trial of its single-cell protein, Uniprotein® on whiteleg shrimp has been conducted.
The results of the trial have found that when Uniprotein® is used in a shrimp’s diet there is an improved survivability rate of up to 75%. In shrimp production, mortality rates can be as high as 80% which is a major challenge and an economical problem for the producer.

According to an article from Reuters, farming and food firms could lose a quarter of their value due to the impact of climate change if they do not adapt to new government policies. However, plant-based, reforestation, and sustainable food source businesses are offering up “big opportunities”.

UniBio’s UniProtein® can be used as a direct supplement in animal feed compounds, and have an extended shelf life, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
