Every leader wants a team that runs without them.

Very few actually know how to build one.

This is what usually happens: you tell them what to do, check their work, tell them what to do next.

That will never scale.

If you want your team to grow beyond you, this is what you need to do:

1. Tell the outcome.
→ Stop telling people how.
→ Tell them what needs to happen.

2. Check one measure.
→ Give them ONE number that tells them if they're winning.
→ Not five metrics...

3. Coach when it goes wrong.
→ Don't react to an incident.
→ Address the pattern, share your own story, then ask what they need to change.

4. Don't take their monkeys.
→ Every person on your team has their own responsibilities.
→ When someone tries to hand you theirs, don't take it.

5. Make them bring you solutions.
→ When someone brings you a problem, your job isn't to solve it.
→ I call it the 1-3-1 Rule: 1 problem, 3 possible solutions, 1 recommendation.

Your number one priority shouldn't be to have all the answers.

It's to build a team that doesn't need to ask you the questions.
