Opinion of TalTech researchers — at the centre of energy security and economic discussion in "Äripäev"

Estonia’s leading business publication, Äripäev, has brought the future of the country's energy market to its front page. The newspaper featured Raivo Vare and TalTech Institute of Geology researcher Kazbulat Shogenov, PhD in geological CO2 storage, as key experts shaping the agenda.
The discussion centres on the critical situation with CO2 allowance prices, which have reached €100 per tonne. The publication places our researcher’s scientific analysis on par with the positions of leading experts in economics and public administration, emphasising that a way out of the energy deadlock is impossible without a scientific approach.
While the market is unsettled by the unpredictability of quotas, Kazbulat Shogenov provides a reasoned argument: the implementation of Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) technologies has shifted from a "future plan" to a present-day economic necessity.
The scientist emphasises that developing CO2 storage infrastructure is the only way to maintain the competitiveness of both Estonian energy producers and the entire local business sector, while protecting consumers from price spikes.
The participation of our researchers in high-level discussions of this calibre confirms TalTech - Tallinn University of Technology ’s mission: we are not only engaged in fundamental science; we offer concrete solutions to ensure energy security and economic stability for Estonia and the entire Baltic region.
"We have long predicted that a moment would come when quota prices would make capture technology more viable than any other alternative. That moment has arrived," notes Kazbulat Shogenov in the Äripäev feature.
The full text of the article is available on the Äripäev portal.

⛰️💧 EAGE 2025, Toulouse — Field Trip: Natural Hydrogen in the Pyrenean Piedmont

As part of the global geoscience event EAGE Annual 2025 (June 2–5, Toulouse, France), and joined a fascinating field trip exploring natural hydrogen systems in the Pyrenean foothills — from source rocks to potential reservoirs.

📍⛰️ Near the town of Pau, we studied geological formations, tested a field-based soil hydrogen detection method, and enjoyed stunning Alpine views.
👩‍🔬 We’ll apply this detection technique in upcoming fieldwork in the Baltic region with my new PhD student.

🛰️ While I still believe our remote sensing innovation — SGEN-NMR (space-based subsurface hydrogen detection via NMR) — is far more advanced, field tools remain essential parts of the exploration toolkit.

🪨 Collected H₂ samples, analyzed outcrops, and observed rare mantle rock exposures stretching over 70 km deep.
🌍 Standing on rocks once deep inside the Earth — humbling, slightly radioactive, but safe.

👍 Love this job! Science, travel, discovery, lab work, new tech, field work — all in one career!
🎓🌍 Future scientists — join us at TalTech Geology Institute to explore Earth, develop energy solutions, and tackle global challenges!

☝️ At SHOGenergy, we’re building big ideas, scientific careers, and innovative hydrogen projects. Join the mission.
👊 Let’s go!
🫵 The world needs scientists more than ever. Be part of the solution.

🇪🇪 Estonian researchers at 86th EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition in Toulouse, France (MEETT Toulouse)
[02.06-06.06.2025]

🌍 A powerful community of geoscience & engineering experts, leaders and next-generation talents gathered at the 86th EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition in Toulouse on 2-6 June. 🇪🇺 EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers), as one of the most significant geoscience professional associations in the world, plays a vital role in the transition of fossil-fuel-targeted activities to the renewables and storage-targeted education, research and business.

💎 Dr Alla Shogenova (senior researcher at TalTech - Tallinna Tehnikaülikool and director of research at SHOGenergy) and Dr Kazbulat Shogenov (scientific researcher at TalTech Geoloogia Instituut and founder and CEO at SHOGenergy) are EAGE members.
💎 This year, over 6,000 people registered onsite for the EAGE Annual conference and exhibition, and 1,300+ presentations were given.
💎 One of the conference's most popular themes was CO2 and H2 (Hydrogen) Storage. Since the last decade, the EAGE community has shifted strongly toward CCUS (CO2 capture and geological storage) and H2 topics, sustainable energy use, and renewables.
💎👨‍🏫 On June 5, Dr. K. Shogenov and Dr. A. Shogenova presented preliminary results of the ongoing CTS project, which focuses on the direct injection of CO2 from ships. SHOGenergy is participating as the modeller for the Baltic Scenario. Their poster, titled “Game-Changing CCUS Technology: Direct Injection from a Ship in the Baltic Sea,” was one of the most visually appealing and well-designed at the poster session, standing out in contrast to the more standard posters.
💎📕 Flyers with information about another ongoing, largest-in-Europe CCUS project, HERCCULES, were spread at the conference as part of a dissemination action within this project.

🙏 Their participation in the EAGE Annual was supported by the CTS project (with direct financial support from the Estonian Ministry of Climate -Kliimaministeerium) and the HERCCULES project. We thank these institutions so much for their support.

👨‍🏫 Alla Shogenova is an EAGE member and has participated in the annual EAGE conferences since 1996.

👨‍🔬 Kazbulat Shogenov has been an EAGE member since 2006 and an EAGE reviewer since 2007. He has been taking part in reviewing extended EAGE abstracts for many years and has been invited several times to convene the EAGE technical sessions.
