🌱 Working with cities to build a greener tomorrow

Across Europe, cities and regions are leading the charge toward a more sustainable future — and the EU’s Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) is helping turn that ambition into action. ♻️🇪🇺

With support from Horizon Europe, CCRI empowers over 140 local governments to implement circular economy strategies that make a real difference — from rethinking construction and urban planning to redesigning local food and resource systems.

At the heart of this initiative is collaboration. Cities like Tampere, Finland are showing what’s possible when public authorities, researchers, businesses and citizens work together to reduce waste, lower emissions and create resilient, future-proof communities.

The CCRI also plays a crucial role in connecting cities with technical expertise, best practices, and funding opportunities — enabling local solutions that can be scaled and replicated across the EU.

It’s a powerful reminder that the green transition doesn’t just start in Brussels — it starts on the ground, in every region ready to lead.

In a landscape full of clear blue lakes and deep green forests, it is the old redbrick buildings that tell the story of Tampere’s industrial heritage. Former factories, which once housed machine and linen production, still dominate the architecture of this Finnish region.Although the roar of indus...

🌍 Europe is Opening Doors for Innovation

The European Commission has just launched its new strategy: "Choose Europe to Start and Scale" — a bold plan to make Europe the top place in the world to start and grow a business. 🚀💡

This strategy focuses on making it easier for startups to scale, attract global talent, and access late-stage funding through the new Scaleup Europe Fund — all while building a stronger, more connected innovation ecosystem across the EU.

Here’s what stands out:
🔹 A new “28th regime” to simplify startup rules across borders
🔹 The Blue Carpet initiative to attract top entrepreneurial talent into the EU
🔹 Easier access to stock options and startup-friendly tax policies
🔹 €10+ billion in funding to support deep-tech companies

It’s a big step toward boosting Europe’s competitiveness — and a great opportunity for founders, investors, and innovation experts across the region.

🚗 Driving the Future of Urban Mobility

The EU-funded ULTIMO project is transforming public transport by deploying autonomous, on-demand electric shuttles in cities across Norway, Germany, and Switzerland.

This initiative goes beyond technology trials—it's paving the way for smarter, cleaner, and more inclusive mobility solutions in Europe. By integrating self-driving vehicles into public transport systems, ULTIMO aims to reduce congestion, cut emissions, and make urban travel more accessible and cost-effective.

The project also addresses how cities can scale autonomous mobility safely, while tackling legal, operational, and digital challenges—demonstrating how EU innovation funding turns ambitious ideas into real-world impact.

🌍Associated vs. Partner Countries with Co-Funding — What’s the Difference and Why It Matters

Understanding how non-EU countries engage with Horizon Europe is crucial for successful project planning and funding applications.

🔹Associated Countries (e.g., Norway, Israel) participate under the same conditions as EU member states, thanks to formal agreements.
🔹Partner Countries (e.g., Australia, Japan, Switzerland) can also join Horizon Europe projects, but typically require national co-funding arrangements.

Choosing the right partners — and understanding their funding eligibility — can significantly influence your proposal's success and financial planning.
