Bitmain CEO Announces New 7nm Bitcoin Mining Chip

The bitcoin mining industry is having an exciting couple of days.

Just a day after Bitfury revealed a new 14nm mining chip called the Bitfury Clarke, Bitmain has upped the ante with the announcement of a new 7nm application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) processor that it says offers better hashing power and energy efficiency over older models.

The ASIC – a powerful type of chip designed for specific types of computation – was announced Friday by Jihan Wu, CEO and co-founder of the Beijing-based firm, at the World Digital Mining Summit in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Designed to mine cryptocurrencies using the SHA256 algorithm – a group that includes bitcoin – the "BM1391" chip will also be powering an upcoming range of Bitmain's Antminer series of mining machines, Wu said, according to a company

Bitcoin Accepted [Everyw]here: Square Wins Patent for Cryptocurrency Payment Network

Public documents published on Aug. 21 show that the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) has approved Square’s application to patent a system that allows merchants to accept cryptocurrencies alongside conventional payment methods and cash out in their currency of choice. The San Francisco-based firm first filed for the patent in Sept. 2017.

From the patent:

“The disclosed technology addresses the need in the art for a payment service capable of accepting a greater diversity of currencies…including virtual currencies including cryptocurrencies (bitcoin, ether, etc.)…than a traditional payment system in a transaction between a customer and a merchant, and specifically for a payment service to solve or ameliorate problems germane to transactions with such currencies. Specifically, the payment service described herein can facilitate real-time (or substantially real-time) transactions, allowing a customer to pay in any currency of their choice, while the merchant can receive payment in a currency of their choice.”

Square would not be the first payment processor to allow merchants to accept payments in cryptocurrency that are automatically converted into local currency. BitPay, for instance, has been processing bitcoin payments since 2011.

However, Square already has tremendous market pe*******on, so adding cryptocurrency payments to its present POS system would allow millions of merchants to accept bitcoin without having to onboard to another payment processor or manually convert cryptocurrency funds into fiat.

Google's next version of Android is starting to come out, but it's a weird situation and you probably can't get it anyway

1)Google is rolling out the latest version of the Android operating system to Pixel and Essential Phone users.

2)This is Android 9.0, dubbed Android "Pie" by Google.
Monday's update includes only a few of the features that Google announced earlier this year.

3)The rest of the features will come in the fall.
It's unclear when phones that aren't made by Google or Essential will get the update.

4)Google says some will get it in the fall - but it's not yet clear when, exactly, it'll come to Samsung's popular Android phones.

Can’t apply the sedition law to WhatsApp messaging

unaid Mev’s case is a textbook example of how poorly law enforcers understand digital crime and culpability. And, of how the law itself often fosters such poor understanding. The 21-year-old ‘admin’ of a WhatsApp group has been in jail since February over an objectionable forward sent by a group member. Mev, a graduate student in Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh district, was arrested following a probe into the complaint against the forward; the person who had forwarded the message, then a juvenile, had also been arrested. Mev was not only charged under the IT Act, but also under IPC Section 124 A (sedition) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class). It is jarring that the authorities showed little appreciation for the fact that a WhatsApp admin doesn’t really have any power to regulate content, even when it is objectionable. Even if one were to assume that it is okay to hold the admin culpable for forwards in the group, Mev had become the admin well after the case had been flagged, that too only because of the platform’s design. Such shoddy police work shows how laws that provide wide room for interpretation lend themselves to misuse.

Big banks have an odd relationship with crypto.

On one hand, most denounce cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin as volatile and risky—some banks going as far as to ban their credit card holders from even buying crypto.

Bitcoin Up $1,000 in Just Two Days, Almost All Top 100 Coins See Green

Crypto markets are continuing to climb fast, with 98 out of the 100 top cryptocurrencies by market cap in the green over the past 24 hours.

Bitcoin (BTC) has grown by $1,000 in just a couple of days, inching firmly to the $7,500 point after having reached an intraday high of $7,542. The top cryptocurrency is trading at around $7,429 at press time, up about 10 percent over a 24 hour period and having gained around 15 percent over the past month, reaching monthly highs.
