Solar on a listed palace makes headlines.

Klinik Angermühle in Deggendorf, where the heritage authority recommended Roofit Solar Energy, is now featured in magazines.

Today, the palace has an 83.11 kWp Velario® solar roof that looks like a black metal roof from the street, and a second phase on the rear wing will bring the total to 155.35 kWp.

At first, the Buchmüller family doubted that solar could belong on a historic monument.

Their psychosomatic clinic, Klinik Angermühle, sits in a listed palace in the town park of Deggendorf, Bavaria. When the old metal roof on the front building needed renovating, their top priority was to keep the building's historic character.

The recommendation came from the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection, which had recently worked with Roofit.Solar on another listed building in Bavaria.

The Velario® integrated solar roof replaces the roof covering completely: a load-bearing standing-seam roof and solar power in one product. From the street, it looks like a black metal roof, matched to the palace's existing metal roofs.

Phase 1 has been running since 2025 at 83.11 kWp. Now the rear wing is getting a solar roof too, bringing the total to 155.35 kWp.

"Heritage and a forward-looking approach must not exclude each other," says Ingrid Buchmüller, co-founder and owner.

That's a wrap! Three busy days at NEC Birmingham at our 5th Grand Designs Live.

A few highlights from us:

On Friday, Paul Iddon joined Kevin McCloud, Polly Billington MP, Kate Sandhu and Gordon Crichton, with Max McMurdo on the stage to discuss "Designing Homes for Efficiency, Durability & Long-Term Value". Paul brought the architect's perspective: energy generation should be part of the architecture, not bolted on afterwards. And his simple rule for roofs: don't put holes in them unless you have to.

Great conversations happened at our stand. Two years after a Roofit.Solar roof appeared on Grand Designs, it was a real pleasure to meet so many homeowners, self-builders and architects who know our work. Roofit.Solar roofs are now on homes across the UK.

A huge thank you to our partner Smartly Energy, especially Ross Miller, Amy Malone, Aaron Nicholson and Renán Palma, and to Andrew Trevvett for supporting the team on the stand alongside Mart Mustkivi and Keneth Parbus.

The Heritage Protection Department of Tallinn's Urban Planning Office (Tallinna Linnaplaneerimise Amet muinsuskaitse osakond) keeps Tallinn looking like Tallinn. Protecting the buildings that carry the city's history, so what makes this place recognizable doesn't get lost to every new renovation or requirement that comes along.

Our team, Mart Mustkivi and Raymo Korkma, met with the department this week to talk about where solar energy fits into that mission, not against it. A historic building shouldn't have to choose between meeting new energy requirements and keeping the architecture that made it worth protecting in the first place.

Same goal, from two different directions: keep historic buildings looking like themselves, while they start producing power too.
