Summer moisture does not leave a building simply because summer has ended. But autumn can provide the right conditions to help remove it. ☀️🍂

Cooler outdoor air often contains less absolute moisture than warm summer air. When this air passes through a solar air collector, sunlight warms it before it enters the building.

The warmed air can then absorb moisture from walls, floors, furniture and other indoor surfaces. With continuous air exchange, the more humid indoor air is gradually displaced and given a way out.

Autumn can be particularly effective because:

- The lower sun reaches vertically mounted collectors at a favourable angle
- Cooler outdoor air often contains less moisture
- Continuous airflow helps carry indoor moisture outside

Opening a window does not always create the same effect. It does not warm the incoming air, maintain steady airflow or continue working while the building is unattended. During warm and humid weather, it may even bring more moisture inside.

Solar ventilation is a gradual process, not an overnight solution or a repair for leaks and structural damp. But it can help prevent seasonal moisture from remaining trapped inside for weeks or months.

A healthy building needs to breathe.

A building can look perfectly dry at the end of summer, and still be holding a surprising amount of moisture.

Warm outdoor air can carry large amounts of water vapour. When that air enters a cooler building, its relative humidity rises. Timber, plaster, furniture and textiles can gradually absorb some of that moisture without showing immediate signs of dampness.

Everyday activities add even more:

• cooking
• showering
• drying laundry
• simply breathing

When air exchange is insufficient, part of this moisture remains inside the building.

That is why a problem that becomes visible in autumn or winter may actually have started much earlier. As temperatures fall, the warning signs can begin to appear: fogged windows, musty smells, damp surfaces and eventually conditions favourable to mould.

The pattern occurs in both Northern and Southern Europe. The climates may be different, but the principle is similar: moisture enters during a warmer, more humid period and needs to be removed when drier outdoor air becomes available.

Summer ending does not automatically make a building dry. The stored moisture still needs a way out.

Oleme uhked, et Sol Navitase tehnoloogia jõuab Ukrainas praktilisse kasutusse. 🇺🇦

Mondo algatuse raames paigaldatakse Ukraina koolidesse, varjenditesse ja sisepõgenike keskustesse 38 Sol Navitase võrguvälist päikeseenergial töötavat ventilatsioonisüsteemi.

Süsteemid töötavad elektrivõrgust sõltumatult ning aitavad parandada õhuringlust, vähendada liigniiskust ja ennetada hallituse tekkeks soodsaid tingimusi. Kõik mudelid võimaldavad ruume päikeseenergia abil täiendavalt soojendada ja passiivselt jahutada.

Sel nädalal osalesid Dobrobati esindajad kahepäevasel koolitusel, kus käsitleti süsteemide paigaldamist ja praktilist kasutamist.

We are proud to see Sol Navitas technology being put to work in Ukraine. 🇺🇦

As part of Mondo’s initiative, 38 Sol Navitas off-grid solar ventilation systems will be installed in Ukrainian schools, shelters and centres for internally displaced people.

The systems operate independently of the electricity grid and help improve air circulation, reduce excess humidity and prevent conditions that allow mould to develop. All models can also provide additional solar air heating and passive cooling.

This week, representatives of Dobrobat took part in a two-day training covering both the installation and practical use of the systems.

Yesterday, we shared Common mistakes HOLIDAY HOME owners make when leaving their property empty.

Now comes the next question:

What should you do instead?

The goal isn't simply to open a window or air the house once before winter. Those can help temporarily, but they don't provide the continuous air exchange needed to manage moisture over weeks or months.

Moisture builds up gradually. That's why prevention works best when it happens continuously, not only when someone is there to open a window or when the damage has already become visible.

For many holiday homes, especially those without reliable mains electricity, using the energy that's already available, the sun, is a practical way to support ongoing ventilation and help maintain healthier indoor conditions while you're away.

Because protecting your holiday home isn't about reacting to mould later.

It's about creating the right conditions so it's less likely to develop in the first place.

Some projects are measured differently.

This week, a single shipment will leave our workshop in Estonia for Ukraine.

Inside are 38 solar-powered ventilation systems that will be installed in selected shelters and accommodation centres supporting internally displaced people.

These buildings often struggle with poor indoor air quality, excess humidity, mould and unreliable electricity. Better ventilation helps create healthier living conditions while reducing moisture and supporting energy-efficient air exchange.

We are grateful to contribute our technology to a project focused on improving everyday living conditions for people rebuilding their lives.

Following the devastating DANA floods in Valencia, Sol Navitas worked alongside local partners to explore how solar air-heating technology could help families recover from moisture-damaged homes while reducing energy consumption.

The project was recently presented at an academic conference, contributing practical insights into sustainable post-disaster recovery.
