Summer moisture does not leave a building simply because summer has ended. But autumn can provide the right conditions to help remove it. ☀️🍂
Cooler outdoor air often contains less absolute moisture than warm summer air. When this air passes through a solar air collector, sunlight warms it before it enters the building.
The warmed air can then absorb moisture from walls, floors, furniture and other indoor surfaces. With continuous air exchange, the more humid indoor air is gradually displaced and given a way out.
Autumn can be particularly effective because:
- The lower sun reaches vertically mounted collectors at a favourable angle
- Cooler outdoor air often contains less moisture
- Continuous airflow helps carry indoor moisture outside
Opening a window does not always create the same effect. It does not warm the incoming air, maintain steady airflow or continue working while the building is unattended. During warm and humid weather, it may even bring more moisture inside.
Solar ventilation is a gradual process, not an overnight solution or a repair for leaks and structural damp. But it can help prevent seasonal moisture from remaining trapped inside for weeks or months.
A healthy building needs to breathe.
