My last few days in Cairo were a whirlwind of great conversations, delicious food, and the very real reminder that what I’m trying to build matters.

Dima Taha is a bright vibrant light! Her energy, passion and heart were so visible. I cannot wait to see your new vision come to life.

Sherine El Essawi Salma El-Naqqash and the entire team at the AUC Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation are doing amazing things to equip and empower female leaders and entrepreneurs, not just in Egypt but in the greater MENA region. I missed seeing you Hala Barakat.

Dana Khayrat - your vision for what’s possible and how to best serve your clients is inspiring. I can’t wait to hear how the pieces come together this summer. Still can’t believe how snaky you were 😉🤭

Reem Sabri - thank you for your years of support and teaching as I’ve been relearning Egyptian Arabic. But more importantly your friendship, all the laughs, and the cake!!

It’s been a really fantastic few days here in Cairo!

I’ve had meeting after meeting with Egyptian women entrepreneurs and professionals, and every single one has been really rich.

We’ve covered the gamut... motherhood and business, financial literacy, the balance between mindset and strategy. We’ve dug into what it means to build impactful businesses inside systems that weren’t designed with us in mind, and what it feels like to realize you’ve outgrown the business you built... and how to navigate through it (one of my fave topics).

These women are running HR consultancies, SaaS businesses, university placement and career coaching practices. A fashion design business for scarves that are so vibrant and gorgeous it was hard to choose just one! There are business coaches, consultants working in public policy, and leading inside big corporations.

In every conversation, when I painted the vision for what we’re building inside the Built to Last Egypt Retreat in October, a full day where American and Egyptian women entrepreneurs and professionals sit down together as peers, I’ve been met with curiosity, eagerness, and a real recognition that both sides stand to gain from a collaboration like this.

We’ll share stories, dig into real business challenges, celebrate what we’ve built, and think together about how best we can continue supporting one another long term.

If this week is any indication, our time together will be deeply validating, beautifully challenging, and exactly what everyone in that room needs.

My first meeting in Cairo was an absolute delight!

Today I had the joy of sitting down with Mayada Maged, managing partner of Staff Arabia, an HR services company here in Cairo that provides payroll, outsourcing, and a whole range of integrated solutions for businesses across the region.

I first met Mayada last fall when I taught a workshop at the AUC Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, but today was the first time we actually got to sit down and chat about the amazing company she and her team are building.

Over tea and snacks, we talked about how business can and should be a force for good. We both believe that how you treat your people matters, and that the communities in which we live and work deserve better because we showed up in them.

We also talked about the power of exposure... how being in a room with the right people opens doors that may be hard to come by otherwise, and how face to face still matters, especially in an era where AI and big tech make personal connection even more important.

That conversation led us naturally into what I’m building in October... and perhaps the most validating and exciting part of our conversation was the reminder that for an experience like this to really work, every woman in that room needs to feel a sense of ownership over it.

This is exactly why I came to Cairo this week.

To co-create this experience in a way that is deeply meaningful for every woman who joins us!

I believe business is one of the most powerful forces for good on the planet.

We know businesses don’t always act this way, but they have the potential to when the people leading it decide that valuing their people and building something successful aren’t a tradeoff.

This weekend, the HeartProfit board gathered to do the hard, necessary work of strategic planning. We had hard conversations, made even harder choices about our limited resources, and did the kind of intense creative wrestling that only happens when a team is willing to go all in together.

We came away with a locked strategy, clear priorities, and a deeper sense of identity as an organization. We know who we are, we know what we’re building, and we know why it matters.

HeartProfit exists to transform the way we do business by developing human-centered leaders, equipping organizations to perform differently, and building a movement that makes valuing people and achieving extraordinary results the new normal.

That’s the core of everything I do, and this weekend reminded me that the work is worth it, especially when you’re doing it alongside people who believe in it as deeply as you do.

I’m honored to lead this team, and I cannot wait to see how we change the world together. 💙

Same pyramids. 35 years apart.

In the photo on top, I had no idea what Egypt would come to mean to me.

I was just a kid, on a horse at the pyramids with my family, squinting into the sun.

But they say once you drink from the Nile, you always come back, and Egypt has had its hooks in me ever since that first visit.

I've stopped trying to understand why. I've just learned to follow the pull.

Which is exactly why I'm bringing 9 women there this October.

I've seen what Egypt does to a person, and I think you deserve to find out what it does to you.

I need to address something I know is on your mind.

If you've been looking at the Built to Last Egypt Retreat and feeling the pull but the news has you second guessing, I want to talk to you directly.

I get it. The headlines are loud, and not always accurate or nuanced.

But here's what I also know...

I’ve been in Egypt during a time of regional conflict before.

I was 11 years old, living in a small town along the Suez Canal when the Gulf War began.

While the world watched with uncertainty, what I remember most isn’t fear.

I remember how life continued.

People gathered together, shops stayed open, and the vibrant energy I'd come to love carried on. There was an underlying steadiness, a kind of collective resilience that didn’t ignore what was happening, but also didn’t allow it to consume everyday life.

And at a national level, Egypt played a role that feels familiar even now, working across the region to stabilize, coordinate, and prevent further escalation.

That experience stayed with me. It shaped how I think about risk, proximity, and perspective, especially when narratives outside a region don’t always reflect the lived reality within it.

Discernment matters.

Here's how I'm approaching safety and awareness on our retreat in October 2026:

✅ I monitor travel advisories from the U.S., UK, Canada, and Australia daily.

✅ Our entire journey uses vetted local guides and private transport. You will never be navigating your time there alone

✅ I speak Arabic and have deep roots and relationships in Egypt. I understand the culture, the context, and the nuance in ways that go far beyond surface-level planning.

✅ I stay in close contact with trusted partners on the ground who give me real, unfiltered information, and I've got another trip planned in May to see for myself.

Egypt is not Iran. It is not the Gulf. Geography, proximity, and context matter.

Is it possible that circumstances could change between now and October?

Yes, and that’s exactly why travel insurance is required for every participant. We plan thoughtfully, and we build in protection.

What I can tell you is this: I would not be bringing 9 women to Egypt if I had any doubt about their safety. Full stop.
