How does your entity take part in climate action? What are your strengths points and how does it influence your market value?

According to Goal 6 of the water-related Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015, “Water scarcity affects more than 40% of the global population and is projected to rise” with the increase in temperatures due to climate change.

Speaking at the Sept. 11 forum, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for Egypt Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin presented the Egyptian presidency’s vision for the COP27.

“Sustainability cannot be narrowed down to a climate act focusing on the reduction of gas emissions. We must work toward a comprehensive outcome that will be presented at the next summit on five axes, including promoting investments in the energy and water sectors and adapting to climate change, while at the same time leading to the creation of new jobs and alleviating the damage caused by extreme poverty,” Mohieldin said.

Is it the time to diversify your investment portfolio? As climate related financial risks become a solid reality for regulators and financial institutions; what action are you willing to take?

The transition to a global low-carbon economy entails deep and fast structural change that poses challenges for economic adjustment everywhere.

One key challenge both for the real economy and financial markets is the fast phase-out of fossil-fuel production, which will necessitate the write-down of major, functioning capital assets and reserves reflected as assets on fossil energy companies’ balance sheets.

Asset stranding is the process of collapsing expectations of future profits from invested capital (the asset) as a result of disruptive policy and/or technological change. This loss of value in fossil-fuel assets is reflected in investor expectations of enterprise value and therefore market prices, including—where listed—stock market indices. Such price corrections lead to a wealth loss for the ultimate owners of these assets; additionally, further losses can propagate to other entities indirectly through highly connected financial networks.
