Startup Haus Cairo Startup Haus Cairo is the enpact hub in North Africa.

In order to promote entrepreneurship and support the local ecosystem, we want to create a Startup Space for all start-up related activities that should become the nucleus of a true entrepreneurship community, characterized by cooperation and mutual trust. In order to jump-start this Startup Space we aim to get as many stakeholders involved as possible in order to cover the different stages of star

ting and establishing a business in the market. Thus entrepreneurs should be able to access advice and contact persons ranging from early stage business support such as business plan creation and product development to specific challenges that entrepreneurs face at various post creation stages e.g. marketing, access to finance, entering new markets and any other need based topic.

More job opportunities. More local products. These are the possibilities Marwan envisions for the future of agriculture in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Marwan Kamal is a trainer at Khodan Shiyan Organization for Development, one of DIRWENA’s agricultural Business Support Organisations (BSOs). During the DIRWENA Kick-off in Duhok last March, he connected with fellow participants, explored new approaches to agriculture, and reflected on the growing challenge of water scarcity facing the region.

Some agricultural practices are learned through training. Others are passed down through generations.

For Fatima Ali Hussein, one of our DIRWENA smallholder farmers, farming is a family legacy she inherited and is now carrying forward for future generations across the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Growing up in Qaladize, Fatima gained the farming fundamentals from her parents and grandparents. They cultivated wheat, rice, grains, and fruit orchards, passing on not only practical skills but also a deeply rooted connection to the land.

Watch Part 2 of Fatima's story of DIRWENA. 🎥

For Fatima, the DIRWENA Kick-off Bootcamp was more than gaining new knowledge. It was about exchanging experiences and discovering how shared learning can turn challenges into opportunities.

Fatima Ali Hussein took part in Sulaymaniyah’s bootcamp last April, where she engaged with the program’s participants.

As part of DIRWENA’s support phase, Fatima is one of 50 smallholder farmers receiving tailored mentorship, on-site agricultural consultations, and an in-kind support package designed to strengthen farming practices and build their resilience across the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
