A Deeper Look Into What Blue Moon Does 🔍 Episode 8: Jasmine.

In early 2024, child labor cases were uncovered in the jasmine fields of Shubra Beloula — a village that supplies jasmine to the global perfume industry. It was a hard finding, and it mattered.

Blue Moon was brought in to help fix it. We carried out risk assessments with jasmine growers, built and delivered training for four suppliers, and supported the development of a child labor monitoring and remediation framework — turning a difficult discovery into real policies and safeguards on the ground.

This is the part of our work that doesn’t always make headlines: showing up after the hard truth, and helping build something better.

A Deeper Look Into What Blue Moon Does 🔍 Episode 7: 100% Egyptian Cotton.

Cotton has a complicated story. Around the world, farmers and their communities have faced real challenges — from working conditions to water use and soil health.

In Egypt, Blue Moon took a closer look. We carried out an impact assessment through stakeholder interviews and on-site evaluations at cotton farms, two ginning facilities, and collection centres — working to understand the day-to-day realities for everyone in the supply chain, from growers to workers to suppliers.
It’s this kind of groundwork — listening before recommending — that shapes real, workable improvements instead of paper compliance.

A Deeper Look Into What Blue Moon Does 🔍 Episode 6: Container Management.

Empty agrichemical containers are a real hazard when they’re left in fields or reused. Working with BASF Egypt, Blue Moon helped build a program to change that.

We raised awareness among growers on triple rinsing and perforating containers to prevent re-use, the responsible use of pesticides in the fields, maintenance and calibration of pesticide equipment, and we facilitated the recovery and recycling for at least 85% of the agrichemical containers used by participating growers.

The bigger goal: a circular economy for these containers — turning a waste and safety problem into acceptable end-use products, and creating jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities for young people (18–35) in the communities we work with.

Proud moment: our founder Manal Saleh has been named to the jury of the 2026 agraya_official Changemaker Awards, recognizing individuals and organizations driving positive change for women in farming — timed to the UN’s International Year of the Woman Farmer.

Speaking with Fruitnet Media International, Manal reflected on nearly two decades translating global sustainability standards into real change on the ground: “We had a very positive impact on smallholders and their communities. One of the most sustainable projects I was involved with is a packhouse for sun-dried tomatoes in Luxor, which is still in operation today. They export to Brazil and Italy and have since introduced other products to their export basket as well.”

On what’s ahead for Egypt’s export sector, she added: “Egypt is already number one in fresh oranges and frozen strawberry exports, and its export basket continues to expand... women are a huge factor in that.”

The Changemaker Awards will be presented at the Agraya Summit in Bologna, Italy.

A Deeper Look Into What Blue Moon Does 🔍 Episode 5: The Tomatoes in Esna.

In Upper Egypt, tomato smallholders are working to meet the same Good Agricultural Practice standards as major exporters — often with far fewer resources.

In 2023, Blue Moon partnered with CARE Egypt Foundation to build the capacity of 150 smallholder tomato producers toward GLOBALG.A.P. IFA SMART v6.0 certification. Given the realities of land tenure in Upper Egypt, 49 smallholders were able to provide the legal documentation needed — and today their names are on a GLOBALG.A.P. certificate issued by HEIACert.

In the same region, Blue Moon also built smallholders a packhouse — including a tomato-drying facility — under a separate, earlier project (the USAID-funded Premium project, 2011–2018), giving them real access to processing and adding value to their products.

Real progress, one grower at a time.

A Deeper Look Into What Blue Moon Does 🔍 Episode 4: The Cassava Capacity Building Program.

Our work doesn’t stop at Egypt’s borders. In 2022, Blue Moon’s Manal Saleh worked with UNIDO as an international expert to build the capacity of cassava smallholders in Sierra Leone, under the EU-funded West Africa Competitiveness Project.

Across three cooperatives — Bondayila, Moawoma, and Tegloma — we delivered a GLOBALG.A.P. localg.a.p./PFA capacity building program built for the realities of smallholder cassava farming, plus a simplified Quality Management System that didn’t overwhelm cooperatives with limited resources.

The result: two national consultants trained to GLOBALG.A.P.’s IFA V6 standard, and Sierra Leone now listed as a country of origin in GLOBALG.A.P.’s Registered Trainer database.

A Deeper Look Into What Blue Moon Does 🔍 Episode 3: NTWG.

Global standards still need local interpretation and translation. That’s the job of the National Technical Working Group (NTWG) — a body that adapts the GLOBALG.A.P. standard into National Interpretation Guidelines (NIGs) that make sense for farmers on the ground.

Blue Moon has headed Egypt’s NTWG since 2010, organizing and moderating the sessions where this happens. Towards the end of 2024, we hosted the latest NIG development meeting with 30 key stakeholders — sponsored by GIZ Egypt (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit).

Fourteen years of translating a global standard into something Egyptian growers can understand and use.

A Deeper Look Into What Blue Moon Does 🔍 Episode 2: The ESET Forum.

In December 2009, a group of international retailers backed the launch of the Egyptian Suppliers Ethical Trading (ESET) Forum — a multi-stakeholder, business-led initiative where Egyptian suppliers come together to solve responsible sourcing issues in ways that actually work locally.

Fifteen years on, the Forum is still going: grounded in national legislation, ILO conventions, and the ETI base code, and open to any Egyptian supplier who wants to join.

Fifteen years of suppliers choosing to solve hard problems together, instead of alone.

A Deeper Look Into What Blue Moon Does 🔍 Episode 1: The Partnership

Since 2008 — right from the very beginning — Blue Moon has worked alongside Spain’s FoodExperts to run FoodSecuritas, an independent residue-monitoring program for Egypt’s fruit and vegetable sector.
International retailers, domestic suppliers, and exporters subscribe to the program to increase trust in Egyptian produce while reducing cost.

It covers registering producers and linking them to their supply chain, building a chemical residue risk assessment for each producer, setting sampling levels per product per season, and publishing results through the FoodExperts Portal.

FoodExperts is based in Madrid and provides on-ground support in 14 countries.

Nearly two decades on, this remains one of Blue Moon’s longest-running partnerships — and one of the reasons Egyptian produce keeps earning trust in international markets.
