الخصائص الأساسية

Core Viral Diseases in Cats: Panleukopenia and “Cat Flu”
Cats are susceptible to several important viral diseases, notably feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) and upper respiratory infections (“cat flu”) caused mainly by feline herpesvirus 1 (FHV 1) and feline calicivirus (FCV).
• Feline panleukopenia: A parvovirus causing severe enteritis, profound leukopenia and high mortality in kittens if unvaccinated; environmental persistence resembles canine parvovirus.
• Cat flu: FHV 1 and FCV cause sneezing, nasal and ocular discharge, conjunctivitis, oral ulceration and anorexia; chronic carriers are common and act as reservoirs.
• Epidemiology: High seroprevalence of FPV, FHV 1 and FCV is reported in clinics and shelters in many countries, with upper respiratory disease outbreaks frequent in multi cat environments.
Routine feline core vaccination (FPV, FHV 1, FCV) markedly reduces severe disease and mortality and is essential in breeding catteries, shelters and urban pet populations.

Rabies in Dogs and Cats: 100% Fatal, 100% Preventable
Rabies is an acute, progressive encephalitis caused by rabies virus, almost invariably fatal once clinical signs appear. Dogs are the main reservoir responsible for human rabies deaths in many developing countries, including regions of Africa and Asia.
• Transmission: Virus is transmitted mainly via bites or deep scratches contaminated with saliva from a rabid animal.
• Clinical stages: Prodromal behavioral changes, followed by furious (aggressive, hypersensitive) or dumb (paralytic) forms, culminating in coma and death.
