Global prescription drug use to increase 24% over next five years

Global use of prescription drugs shows no sign of slowing down over the next few years, according to a new report, which projects 4.5 trillion doses will be used in 2020, with China and India driving the spike in demand.

The amount represents a 24% increase over current prescription drug use, according to an analysis released this week by the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics. It estimates emerging markets such as Brazil, China, India and Indonesia will represent nearly half of all growth over the next five years.

Some of those countries, such as Brazil and China, have in recent years reformed theirhealthcare systems with the aim of providing near-universal insurance coverage, and that has increased spending. Many countries have also seen their populations grow older, much like in the U.S. That has helped drive demand for drugs as the rates of noncommunicable diseases rise. More than half of the world's population is expected to consume more than one dose per day of medicines in 2020, up from one-third in 2005.

Despite the increased use, the report forecasts a general slowdown in spending growth over the next five years, which will rise between 29% and 32% to reach $1.4 trillion in 2020, compared with the 35% increase that occurred between 2010 and 2015.

Several factors play a role in lowering spending growth over the next several years. Increased use of branded medications along with price increases will result in $163 billion in spending growth. But the report projects that price discounts and rebates, as well as a number of medications losing patent exclusivity in the coming years will result in $178 billion in reduced spending on expensive, brand-name drugs as more biosimilar drugs enter the market.

Drug use in developed markets is expected to see modest gains over the next five years. The U.S. and Europe are estimated to increase by 100 million doses in 2020.

Specialty medications, which have been at the center of debate in recent months because of their high cost, are expected to make up 28% of global spending on medication in 2020, up from 26% in 2015. Developed markets will continue to outpace spending on specialty drugs, with such products making up 36% of the market in those countries in 2020 compared with 12% in emerging markets.

The IMS report projects more than 225 new drugs will be introduced by 2020, with one-third of those products being oncology medications.

“During the next five years, we expect to see a surge of innovative medicines emerging from R&D pipelines, as well as technology-enabled advances that will deliver measurable improvements to health outcomes,” said Murray Aitken, executive director of the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics, in a released statement. “With unprecedented treatment options, greater availability of low-cost drugs and better use of evidence to inform decisionmaking, stakeholders around the world can expect to get more 'bang for their medicine buck' in 2020 than ever before.”

Pfizer and Allergan Merge in $160B Mega Deal !

Pfizer Inc. and Allergan plc have entered into a definitive merger agreement in a stock transaction currently valued at $363.63 per Allergan share, for a total enterprise value of approximately $160 billion, based on the closing price of Pfizer common stock of $32.18 on Nov. 20, 2015.
According to a press release, the transaction represents more than a 30 percent premium based on Pfizer’s and Allergan’s unaffected share prices as of Oct. 28, 2015. Allergan shareholders will receive 11.3 shares of the combined company for each of their Allergan shares, and Pfizer stockholders will receive one share of the combined company for each of their Pfizer shares.
“The proposed combination of Pfizer and Allergan will create a leading global pharmaceutical company with the strength to research, discover and deliver more medicines and therapies to more people around the world,” said Ian Read, Chairman and CEO, Pfizer. “Allergan’s businesses align with and enhance Pfizer’s businesses, creating best-in-class, sustainable, innovative and established businesses that are poised for growth. Through this combination, Pfizer will have greater financial flexibility that will facilitate our continued discovery and development of new innovative medicines for patients, direct return of capital to shareholders, and continued investment in the United States, while also enabling our pursuit of business development opportunities on a more competitive footing within our industry.”
“The combination of Allergan and Pfizer is a highly strategic, value-enhancing transaction that brings together two biopharma powerhouses to change lives for the better,” said Brent Saunders, CEO, Allergan. “This bold action is the next chapter in the successful transformation of Allergan allowing us to operate with greater resources at a much bigger scale. Under the terms of the proposed transaction, the businesses of Pfizer and Allergan will be combined under Allergan plc, which will be renamed “Pfizer plc.” The companies expect that shares of the combined company will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange and trade under the “PFE” ticker. Upon the closing of the transaction, the combined company is expected to maintain Allergan’s Irish legal domicile. Pfizer plc will have its global operational headquarters in New York and its principal executive offices in Ireland.
As a result of the combination with Allergan and subsequent integration of the two companies, Pfizer now expects to make a decision about a potential separation of the combined company’s innovative and established businesses by no later than the end of 2018, the release said.
The completion of the transaction is expected in the second half of 2016. Pursuant to the terms of the merger agreement, the Allergan parent company will be the parent company of the combined group. A wholly owned subsidiary of Allergan will be merged with and into Pfizer, and subject to receipt of shareholder approval, the Allergan parent company will be renamed “Pfizer plc” after the closing of the transaction.

Biotech CEO Found Guilty of Discrimination for Only Hiring "Beautiful" Women!

The boss behind a banned cancer "wonder drug" has been found guilty of s*x discrimination after writing "Red lipstick, heels - good" on his personal assistant's job application.
A tribunal heard that David Noakes also remarked after interviewing another woman: "We can't hire her as she is ugly and overweight and I only employ beautiful women."
Another time he reportedly asked: "How are we supposed to hire her, did you see what she was wearing and the size of her? We can't have her on the frontline representing GcMaf looking like that."
Mr Noakes, 62, is chief executive of the pharmaceutical company behind the unlicensed "GcMaf" drug, which was banned earlier this year.
It claims to treat cancer and autism, but health watchdogs said it may pose a significant risk to health and that blood plasma used to make it was not to be given to humans.
Mr Noakes was taken to an employment tribunal by his former £40,000-a-year personal assistant Lucia Pagliarone, who said she witnessed s*xist treatment after going to work for him.
Miss Pagliarone, 28, told the panel that shortly after starting her employment in July 2014 she found her CV in a pile of papers on Noakes' desk.
On it was a note saying: "Red lipstick, heels - good; tattoos, do not approve; wearing a dress - excellent."
The tribunal also heard that, during her employment, Miss Pagliarone witnessed inappropriate remarks and angry outburst from Mr Noakes - mostly towards women.
She also claimed that Mr Noakes once told her that a colleague would "like me, only be polite to you if you are good-looking".
Miss Pagliarone got a performance bonus of £500 in December 2014, but was sacked the following month after six months with the firm.
The panel ruled that Mr Noakes, who runs Guernsey-based pharmaceutical firm Immuno Biotech, was guilty of s*x discrimination and ordered him to pay Miss Pagliarone £10,500.
They said that remarks he made were inappropriate and constituted an "intimidating, hostile and humiliating working environment" for her. They added that such conduct, clearly based on s*x, would affect the dignity of women in the workplace.
They stated: "The tribunal has been persuaded that insulting, gender-specific comments were uttered by Mr Noakes on multiple occasions and it was clear that Miss Pagliarone suffered a detriment.
"The applicant witnessed violent outburst from him with lots of swearing being commonplace, which the applicant found very intimidating."
Miss Pagliarone also pursued Mr Noakes for unfair dismissal based on her gender, but the tribunal said she did not supply sufficient evidence to support the claim. But the tribunal ruled that she was subject to verbal harassment.
The tribunal added that it was "breathtaking" that Mr Noakes' company, which has 28 staff, had no policies or procedures employees could refer to given the products it dealt with.
Mr Noakes hit the headlines in February when GcMaf was banned by Guernsey officials and its UK factory was closed over fears materials used were not fit for human consumption.
The company claimed GcMAF was "the body's way of becoming cancer free", that 85 per cent of people with autism "respond" and "15 per cent make full recoveries".
It also claims "full recoveries in 70 per cent of cases" of ME and chronic fatigue syndrome. But experts said there was no evidence to support the claims.

MIDEAST STOCKS-Dubai property stocks rise on hopes for industry exhibition.

DUBAI, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Gulf equity markets edged up in early trade on Monday, despite weaker oil and a fresh sell-off in China, and Dubai led gains as investors bid up property stocks, hoping that companies would announce positive news at an annual industry exhibition.

Dubai's index rose 1.2 percent with developer DAMAC , the most traded stock, jumping 2.0 percent and the runner-up, builder Arabtec , surging 3.8 percent.

The Cityscape property exhibition and conference opened in Dubai on Monday; companies in the sector have traditionally used it to announce new projects and contract awards.
