Global Prices of Whiteleg Shrimp (Vannamei): Influencing Factors and Lessons to learn for Egypt
Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) has become the dominant farmed shrimp species worldwide, making a significant contribution to global seafood production, international trade, and the livelihoods of millions of people. The leading shrimp-producing five countries including (Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Viet Nam) have developed highly competitive production systems. However, farm-gate prices vary considerably among these countries, even for shrimp of the same size.
For shrimp weighing 30 shrimp/kg, the farm-gate selling price ranges from approximately US$3.30/kg in Ecuador to US$5.60/kg in Thailand. For 50 shrimp/kg, prices range from US$2.50/kg in Ecuador to US$5.20/kg in Thailand, while for 80 shrimp/kg, prices range from US$1.90/kg in Ecuador to US$4.03/kg in Thailand in July 2026.
Understanding the factors responsible for these price differences is important for producers, investors, policymakers, and aquaculture professionals seeking to improve profitability and competitiveness. Farm-gate prices are influenced by a complex interaction of factors, including production costs, productivity, supply and demand, shrimp size, exchange rates, processing capacity, disease status, logistics, and trade policies, rather than by production costs alone.
With reference to Dr. Suresh Kumar (CEO Aqua World, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India), the following key factors drive variations in farm-gate shrimp prices and have important implications for the global shrimp industry:
• Production costs: Feed, seed, labour, electricity, fuel, and farm management costs vary considerably among countries and production systems. Differences in these costs directly affect the profitability of shrimp farming and the prices producers require to maintain viable operations.
• Supply and harvest volume: Countries with high production and large harvest volumes, such as Ecuador, may experience periods of lower farm-gate prices because of increased market supply. Conversely, reduced supply can contribute to higher prices.
• Domestic and export demand: Strong domestic consumption and increased international demand can support higher farm-gate prices, particularly when demand exceeds available supply.
• Shrimp size and productivity: Growth rate, survival rate, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and average harvest size influence production costs and profitability and can therefore affect the price received by farmers. Market preferences for specific shrimp sizes also play an important role in determining price differentials.
• Exchange rates: Changes in exchange rates can influence the competitiveness of shrimp exports and, consequently, the prices received by farmers in local currency and in US-dollar terms.
• Processing and logistics: Differences in transportation costs, processing capacity, cold-chain infrastructure, and access to export facilities can affect the overall value of shrimp and the prices paid at the farm gate.
• Disease status and seasonal production: Disease outbreaks, extreme weather events, and seasonal production and harvesting patterns can cause temporary changes in supply, resulting in significant fluctuations in farm-gate prices.
• Market access and trade policies: Import tariffs, sanitary and sanitary requirements, certification standards, market access, and buyer preferences can influence the competitiveness of shrimp-producing countries and the prices paid to farmers.
For Egypt, these international price differences provide important lessons for the development of a more competitive shrimp aquaculture sector. Improving farm productivity, strengthening biosecurity, adopting modern farming technologies, reducing production and energy costs, improving access to high-quality seed and feed, and developing efficient processing, cold-chain, and marketing systems could enhance the competitiveness and profitability of Egyptian shrimp production. At the same time, Egypt's shrimp sector will need to address challenges related to production costs, disease management, water quality, market access, and value-chain efficiency to compete effectively in regional and international markets.
