A ship’s speed is measured in knots because it is a unit of speed historically used in navigation, tied to the maritime tradition. The term originates from a method sailors used in the past to measure speed at sea.

The History:
• Sailors used a device called a log line, a rope with evenly spaced knots tied along its length.
• The log line was thrown into the water, and as the ship moved, the number of knots that passed through a sailor’s hands in a specific amount of time (usually 30 seconds) was counted.
• This count determined the ship’s speed in “knots.”

Why Knots?
• A knot is equal to one nautical mile per hour.
• Nautical miles are based on the Earth’s circumference and are more practical for navigation because they are tied to the planet’s geography (1 nautical mile = 1 minute of latitude = 1.852 kilometers).

Using knots allows for consistency and precision in maritime and aerial navigation, making it the standard unit for measuring speed at sea and in the air.

Understanding Ship Stability:
The Foundation of Safe Navigation

Ship stability is one of the most critical aspects of maritime safety. It determines whether a vessel can return to its upright position after being tilted by waves, wind, or cargo shifts. Understanding stability principles can mean the difference between safe operations and maritime disasters.

**What Makes a Ship Stable?**

Three key points define ship stability:

• Center of Gravity (G): The point where the ship's total weight acts downward

• Center of Buoyancy (B): The center point of the underwater volume, where buoyant force acts upward

• Metacenter (M): The point where the vertical line through the new center of buoyancy intersects the ship's centerline when tilted

**The Stability Rule**

A ship is stable when the Metacenter (M) is above the Center of Gravity (G). This creates a righting moment that returns the vessel to upright position. When M falls below G, the ship becomes unstable and may capsize.

**Why It Matters**

Proper cargo loading, ballast management, and fuel consumption all affect the ship's center of gravity. Ship officers continuously monitor stability throughout the voyage, especially during loading/unloading operations and in rough weather conditions.

At Clever Marine, we understand that vessel stability isn't just theory—it's the backbone of maritime safety and operational efficiency across all our service locations.
