THE 7 Cs OF COMMUNICATION
Leadership is not only about making decisions.
It is about making sure people understand those decisions.
A leader can have a strong strategy, but poor communication can turn a good strategy into poor ex*****on.
The 7 Cs give leaders a practical communication checklist.
1. CLEAR
Say what you mean.
Your team should know the objective, the expectation and the action required.
2. CONCISE
Get to the point.
Too much information can hide the message.
3. CONCRETE
Use facts, examples and specific expectations.
Instead of saying “Improve customer service,” define what improvement means.
4. CORRECT
Check your facts and information.
Leaders build credibility when their communication is accurate.
5. COHERENT
Make your message logical and connected.
Your goals, decisions and actions should tell the same story.
6. COURTEOUS
Respect the people receiving the message.
You can challenge performance without damaging dignity or trust.
7. COMPLETE
Give people the information they need to act.
A missing piece of information can create confusion, assumptions and rework.
For leaders, effective communication is not about speaking more.
It is about creating understanding that leads to action.
Ask yourself
Does your team understand your priorities?
Do they know what you expect?
Are your words consistent with your actions?
Communication is a leadership skill.
And like any leadership skill, it can be developed.
