The condition of the north wall of the pronaos does not appear to have changed significantly over the past century, but it has undergone restoration work. The main difference between the two images lies in the reproduction of colors, which do not appear in the old black-and-white photographs. The preserved colors will be incorporated into the study of the temple's hieroglyphic paleography, which is currently underway.

Did you know ? When statue fragments start talking. By David Brügger

While documenting and photographing statues in our magazines, long-separated fragments suddenly clicked back together — and a person from Deir el-Medina quietly re-emerged.
This kneeling stelophorous statue of Neferabu shows a man carefully staging himself: a long, smooth white kilt, red-painted flesh on hands, arms, and feet, and a stela held upright like a message board. At the top, a yellow rising sun; below, seven painted lines of text framed in red — designed to be read, noticed, remembered.
Nothing here is accidental. At Deir el-Medina, statues weren’t just objects — they were social actors. Set up in temples or ritual spaces, they spoke for their owners long after they were gone: advertising piety, status, skill, and belonging. Idealised, brightly painted, and placed where eyes (human and divine) would fall on them.
Rejoining fragments like these doesn’t just rebuild stone — it restores intention. It reminds us that these statues were once carefully curated self-presentations, meant to endure, to participate, and above all… to be seen.
Different millennium, same impulse.

Did you know? Hieroglyphic paleography. By Sandrine Vuilleumier

This is the study of the form of hieroglyphic signs and their evolution. The contours and colors can vary depending on the period and sometimes reveal particularities linked to a craftsman or workshop. By bringing together different examples, it becomes possible to compare and study them.
In the past, plastic sheets were placed on the walls to draw as closely as possible to the engravings. This practice has been replaced by drawing the signs from photographs. The epigraphic mission of the University of Basel now uses 3D modeling techniques applied to the walls, which allow for the collection of a greater amount of reusable information. Combined with a database, this method produces accurate and consistent data, leading to more sophisticated analyses that take into account all the signs found in the Ptolemaic temple of Deir el-Medina.

Did you know? Bread, beer, and eternity: Offering tables ensured eternal meals for the dead in ancient Egypt! By Andrea Fanciulli.

The offering table is a stone object associated with the presentation of food and drink for the deceased. Carved images, offering formulas, and the pouring of liquids across its surface ensured the sustenance of the deceased’s ka, or life force.
Across many cultures, both past and present, food plays a role in maintaining a connection between the living and the dead. In modern-day Mexico, for example, during the Día de los Mu***os, food is prepared for the dead and shared in cemeteries, renewing communal bonds through memory and shared practice.
In Egypt, this concern took a durable form. Food might perish and gestures might cease, but stone was chosen to outlast generations. More than an object for a single moment, the offering table functioned as a lasting guarantee through which nourishment could extend into eternity.
À table !

Did you know? From artists of yesterday to restorers of today. By Manon Lefèvre

The Deir el-Medina mission not only brings together numerous Egyptologists, but also benefits from the skills of a large team of restorers. Thanks to international collaboration, specialists from Egypt, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Spain work together, each contributing their own perspective, methods, and area of expertise.
The mission brings together restorers specializing in stone, mud brick, wall paintings, ceramics, wood, metal, and even textiles. This diversity is rare on an archaeological site and is a real asset. It ensures the long-term conservation and transmission of the objects and monuments of the community of artists who lived on the site more than 3,000 years ago. .
In this way, their lives and work can be understood, preserved, and showcased. Restoring these artifacts is a way of continuing the work of the artists of Deir el-Medina and passing on their legacy.

Did you know? (Sometimes) we forget the whip and the hat! By Marie-Lys Arnette

Archaeological work is not limited to excavations: it also includes studying objects found during the dig, as well as research in archives and libraries. In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, even Indy goes to the library in Venice and consults his father’s journal to find the tomb of the Knight!
Here, Kyle Dillon (JHU) is studying magnificent stone cups from the New Kingdom from earlier excavations, decorated with fish and blooming lotus flowers. Together with Alix Frauchiger (University of Geneva), he is also working on earrings from the same period that strikingly resemble our modern hoop earrings. Meanwhile, Benji de Almeida Newton (JHU) is immersed in B. Bruyère’s excavation journal, available online on the Ifao website — not to reach the Grail, but to learn more about the tombs of the scribe Ramose being studied by our mission!

Did You Know? Ancient Egyptian Coffin Beards Followed Fashion Trends Too. By the Medjehu team: Gersande Eschenbrenner, Lisa Sartini, Jaume Vilaró Fabregat, Anna Giulia De Marco, and Paolo Marini.

These ancient Egyptian wooden beards from anthropoid coffins suggest that great attention was paid to fashion and personal appearance. Beyond the wide variety of documented hairstyles, different styles were also conceived for beards. This is clearly visible in the beards of anthropoid coffins from the New Kingdom and the Third Intermediate Period, which display distinct shapes, lengths, and treatments. Such variations show that, even in funerary contexts, fashion and aesthetic choice played an important role in how individuals wished to be represented.

Did you know? From Ancient Egyptian Craftsmanship to Coptic Prayers …by Mariam El-Sawy and Ahmed Hossam

Deir el-Medina, the village of Egypt’s ancient craftsmen, later became a Coptic Christian site. Long after the temple in the site had echoed with chants to the goddess Hathor, Coptic Christians transformed it into a place of worship, establishing the Monastery of Saint Isidorus, from which the site gained its Arabic name “Deir el-Medina.” Even today, stones that once resonated with ancient hymns bear inscriptions and traces of the nomina sacra of Jesus Christ, the abbreviated sacred names Ⲓ̅Ⲥ̅ and Ⲭ̅Ⲥ̅ (Ⲓⲏⲥⲟⲩⲥ = Jesus; Xⲣⲓⲥⲧⲟⲥ = Christ), showing how this place remained sacred to different peoples across centuries. Deir el-Medina is a window into the past, where diverse peoples and religions left their mark.
