Here is how most coaching engagements are structured, even good ones.

The client steps out of their life to come to the coaching. You do the work. Something shifts. Then the client steps back into their life, where everything else takes over.

The coaching is happening here. Life is happening there. And the distance between them is where impact gets lost.

It is not a failure of the coaching. It is the natural boundary of a session-only view.

When coaching is held at the journey level, the client is not stepping out of their life to visit the coaching. The coaching travels with them. The insights from your last conversation show up in the meeting, on the commute, in how they handle something difficult.

The coaching does not pause between sessions.

A coach we spoke to recently had a client simply stop responding.

No explanation. No final session. Just gone.

It happens more often than coaches talk about. And when it does, it tends to land as a question about the coach. Was the coaching not good enough? Did something go wrong?

Usually, neither is true.

When coaching is held session by session, with no shared architecture of the journey, the client has no visible sense of what they are building toward. Each session is a discrete moment. When life gets busy, the easiest thing to cancel is the thing with no clear destination.

A designed journey changes that. The client knows where they are going and what this leg of the journey is for. That is what keeps them in it.

When the session is the container, you have 60 minutes to justify the investment.

60 minutes to create something meaningful. To bring your client back. To make the coaching feel worth it.

In the session view, the client decides to continue after every single conversation. The journey is never secured. The coaching is always on trial.

That pressure changes how you show up. It pushes toward making the client feel good rather than helping them move forward. Satisfaction starts to replace transformation as the goal.

Most coaches never name this pressure. But most coaches feel it.

In this compelling episode of The Coaching Edge Podcast, hosts Erwin de Grave and Steve Jeffs sit down with Jennifer Britton — internationally recognized coach, author, and thought leader in group and team coaching. From her early days leading international teams via long-range radio to writing the world’s first book on group coaching, Jennifer shares her inspiring journey and lessons learned over 20 years as the founder of Potentials Realized.

The conversation explores the evolving landscape of coaching — from the rise of virtual facilitation to the power of co-leadership, relational dynamics, and creating human-centered spaces in a tech-driven world. Jennifer emphasizes how team and group coaching empower individuals, expand perspective, and foster collaboration across difference — something increasingly vital in today's complex, hybrid workplaces.

Listeners gain insight into why coaching is more essential than ever as a tool for transformation, not only for leaders but for entire organizations. She offers tips for coaches looking to step into group and team coaching, stresses the importance of co-coaching partnerships, and shares how small, consistent actions lay the foundation for long-term success.

Whether you're a coach, team leader, or organizational change agent, this episode is a masterclass in how coaching can spark innovation and human connection in uncertain times.
