El orden Rodentia no se llama así por casualidad. Si algo distingue a los roedores (y por ende a los ratones) del resto de mamíferos es su capacidad para roer, manifestada por la presencia de unos dientes incisivos superiores e inferiores enormes en comparación al resto de su cráneo. Estos tienen una gran cantidad de esmalte en su cara frontal y crecen de forma constante durante toda la vida del animal.
Como los incisivos de los ratones crecen sin parar, estos tienen que roer los materiales que les rodean siempre que puedan (sobre todo durante la alimentación). De lo contrario, estos dientes acabarían atravesando su cráneo y matándolos.

If anything distinguishes rodents (and therefore mice) from other mammals, it is their ability to gnaw, manifested by the presence of enormous upper and lower incisor teeth compared to the rest of their skull. These have a large amount of enamel on their front side and grow constantly throughout the animal’s life.
As mice’s incisors grow non-stop, they have to gnaw on the materials around them whenever they can (especially while feeding). Otherwise, these teeth would end up piercing their skull and killing them.
