New EU border rules: EES & ETIAS

Starting soon, the European Union is introducing two major border control systems for travelers from visa-free countries:

🟦 Entry/Exit System (EES)

🗓 Launches on October 12, 2025

📌 What it does:
✔ Replaces passport stamps
✔ Records every entry and exit digitally
✔ Collects biometric data (photo + fingerprints for 12+)

🗂 Your data will be stored for 3 years
✅ Future border crossings will be faster (just passport scan)

🌍 Applies to Schengen countries (except Ireland & Cyprus) + Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein

🟨 ETIAS (Travel Authorisation)

🗓 Expected from late 2026

📌 What to know:
✔ Not a visa — it’s a short online form
✔ Costs €7 (free for under 18 / over 70)
✔ Valid for 3 years or until passport expires
✔ Required before entering the EU for visa-free travelers from 60+ countries

❗ Who’s affected?

All citizens from visa-free countries entering the EU for short stays (up to 90 days).
Examples: 🇺🇸 🇬🇧 🇨🇦 🇯🇵 🇦🇺 🇬🇪 🇷🇸 and many others.

❗ Who is NOT affected?

People residing in the EU under temporary protection are exempt.
They won’t need to register or apply — just show proof of status.

Documents every student needs in Spain 🇪🇸

If you're planning to study in Spain, getting your paperwork in order is essential. The key documents you'll need include:

Student Visa – This is your entry pass into Spain, required if you’re staying longer than 90 days.
NIE (Foreigners’ Identification Number) – You’ll need this for everything from opening a bank account to signing a rental contract.
Empadronamiento – A registration that confirms where you live in Spain, needed for local services.
Health Insurance – Ensure you have either private insurance or a European Health Insurance Card.
Proof of Enrollment – Universities will ask for this document to confirm your student status.
Make sure to organize and apply for these documents in advance to avoid any delays with your studies!

🔜10 November 2024 is the date set for the introduction of the much-delayed Entry-Exit System (EES) for the Schengen area 🇪🇺

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new digital border management system being implemented by the European Union to improve external border control and enhance security. Here’s a breakdown of what it entails and why it's significant:
Purpose of the EES
1. Enhanced Security: The EES aims to strengthen security at the EU’s external borders by systematically registering entry and exit data of non-EU nationals crossing these borders.
2. Efficient Border Management: By digitizing the process, the system seeks to streamline border checks, reducing wait times and improving the overall efficiency of border management.
3. Overstay Detection: The system helps in identifying individuals who exceed their authorized period of stay in the Schengen Area, thus aiding in managing illegal immigration more effectively.

How It Works
• Data Collection: The EES records data such as name, type of travel document, biometric data (fingerprints and facial images), and the date and place of entry and exit.
• Automation: It replaces the manual stamping of passports with an electronic record, speeding up border crossings and reducing the potential for errors.
• Integration: The system is designed to work in conjunction with other EU information systems such as the Visa Information System (VIS) and the proposed European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), to provide a comprehensive overview of non-EU nationals entering the region.
Impact on Travelers
• Non-EU Nationals: Travelers from outside the EU will have their entry and exit data recorded upon crossing the EU borders. They will also undergo a biometric verification process.
• Faster Processing: Frequent travelers might experience quicker processing due to the automated system, especially those pre-registered or those using automated border control gates.
