Tió - Catalan Christmas tradition!

In early December parents and children set out together to the woods to go and find a Caga Tió, a mystical creature, a living “p**p tree log”.

Kids look behind trees and bushes while constantly calling out for Caga Tió. Some find it there, and some others just find Caga Tió standing in front of the home door.

The poor Tió is freezing and hungry, hence it is taken inside and the children cover it with a blanket to keep him warm.

Tió cannot p**p on an empty stomach. Therefore, every evening the kids feed it with fruits and nuts and give him water.

The better you feed him, the nicer he will be to you on the night of 24.

That night, the children go to a room together and say a poem while the parents and the Tió stay in the living room.

Then the children join them and while nicely hitting the Tió they sing the "Caga"Tió song ( which includes the imperative to p**p and p*e nice things. And then Tió makes his magic!

The Feast of Corpus Christi was introduced in the 13th century as a celebration of Holy Communion. From then on it spread across Europe and even today, six centuries later, it is still a religious, social, cultural and festive event of great importance.

From June 14 to 18, the "ou com balla" / " the dancing egg" shows us the magic of simplicity. It will be displayed in 17 fountains, being the one in the Cathedral of Barcelona the origin of this tradition, back to 1636. This phenomenon, around the Feast of Corpus Christi in Barcelona, has, through time, become a symbol identified with the feast in the city.

It includes an egg, water and an abundance of flowers, all three of which are symbols of fertility and regeneration, part of the vitality of the spring season. It is popularly thought that the dancing egg represents the host, or the body of Christ in the Eucharist, inside a rich casing decorated with precious stones.

Most known fountains are: Arxiu històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona (C. de Santa Llúcia,1), Ateneu Barcelonès (C.de la Canuda,6) , Catedral de Barcelona, Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres (C. del Bisbe Caçador, 3) Frederic Marés Museum (Pl. de Sant lu, 5), being all of them, the 17 beautiful!

Festes de Santa Eulàlia - fom 7 to 12th february

The Santa Eulàlia festival programme features tons of concerts, processions, open house events and other activities of all kinds, mostly for children.

The festival takes place at many venues all over Barcelona but it is mostly in the Ciutat Vella the old city of Barcelona.

Music plays also a very important part in the Santa Eulalia festival and it usually includes a children’s photography competition called the ‘Foto Laia’ and the ‘Premis Ciutat de Barcelona’ awards for shopkeepers at the end of the festival.

The festival o is also known as “La Laia” festival, as Laia is the nickname for Eulalia. Is Barcelona’s biggest annual festival for children.
