📍 AETCC 2026 | Cáceres🗓️ Wednesday, 10 June 2026 📌 SESSION 07-A: Archaeology and Close-Range Remote Sensing (17:00–18:15)

We will present the paper:
“LiDAR analysis of PNOA data for the topographic interpretation of the funerary landscape at the site of ‘Castillo de Doña Blanca’ (Cádiz, Spain)”P. Sicre-González, A. Pecci, A. M. Niveau-de-Villedary y Mariñas (University of Cádiz)

The contribution is framed within the research activities of the PHOENIX MEDITERRANEA (HUM-509) and PHOENIX-UASL project.
The study investigates the potential of LiDAR data from the Spanish National Aerial Orthophotography Plan (PNOA) for the interpretation of the funerary landscape associated with the Castillo de Doña Blanca (El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz), with a particular focus on the Necrópolis de las Cumbres.
By processing high-resolution Digital Terrain Models and applying geomorphological enhancement techniques within a GIS environment, the analysis has identified micro-topographic anomalies consistent with tumulus-like structures, allowing a substantial redefinition of the spatial extent and internal organisation of the necropolis.
The results suggest a funerary landscape that is significantly more extensive and complex than previously understood, structured through strong relationships between topography, visibility, and spatial hierarchy.
More broadly, the study highlights the value of LiDAR as a non-invasive archaeological tool, contributing to the development of new methodological frameworks for the analysis and interpretation of ancient landscapes.

📖 “Fortified Landscapes: Remote Sensing and the Archaeology of Mediterranean Defensive Systems (10th century BCE – 5th century CE)”

This Special Issue focuses on the study of fortified landscapes and defensive systems across the Mediterranean, from the Iron Age to Late Antiquity, through innovative approaches based on remote sensing, UAV applications, geophysics, GIS, landscape archaeology, aerial and satellite imagery, and integrated digital methodologies.

The initiative is closely connected to the aims of the PHOENIX-UASL project, which explores the potential of non-invasive and digital technologies for the investigation, documentation, and interpretation of archaeological landscapes.

This conference represents a key international forum for the exchange of knowledge on remote sensing methodologies and their applications in Earth sciences, environmental studies, and archaeology.

Participation in this context is a significant step in the research training of Antonio Pecci within the PHOENIX-UASL project, enabling direct engagement with the remote sensing scientific community beyond strictly archaeological boundaries.
Such interdisciplinary interactions are essential for strengthening methodological awareness, refining analytical approaches, and situating archaeological research within broader technological frameworks. In this sense, AETCC offers a valuable opportunity for critical dialogue with specialists in geospatial analysis and Earth observation, contributing to a more integrated and robust research practice.

📸 A few highlights from Pint of Science – Cádiz, where PHOENIX-UASL had the pleasure of bringing research out of the lab and into a public science setting 🍻🔬

A sincere thank you to the organisers of Pint of Science for the invitation and for creating an open and engaging space where science, communication, and society can meet and interact 🤝.

During the event, Antonio Pecci (University of Cádiz, PHOENIX-UASL – MSCA) presented:“Drones y LiDAR en el paisaje histórico de Cádiz”, showcasing how UAV-based LiDAR is transforming the study of archaeological landscapes in Cádiz.

The evening was a valuable opportunity to share how technological innovation and archaeological practice can work together to “see” beyond the visible landscape and reconstruct complex ancient environments 🌍.

Thanks to everyone who joined and contributed to the discussion!

As part of Pint of Science, PHOENIX-UASL will present its research in Cádiz:
"Drones y LiDAR en el paisaje histórico de Cádiz", Antonio Pecci (Universidad de Cádiz)

🎙Funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship, PHOENIX-UASL explores how drones equipped with LiDAR are transforming landscape archaeology. Focusing on the province of Cádiz—at sites such as the Castillo de Doña Blanca—this technology makes it possible to “see” beneath vegetation and detect microtopographies invisible from the ground. By combining technological innovation with traditional archaeological methods, the project reconstructs the history of ancient Phoenician-Punic landscapes while making scientific research more accessible to society.

📸 A few moments from Landscape 7 Conference (Naples – Santa Maria Capua Vetere, 11–12 May 2026), where the PHOENIX-UASL project took part in an inspiring international exchange on archaeological landscape studies.
A sincere thank you to the organisers for the invitation, the excellent coordination, and for creating a stimulating academic environment that encouraged meaningful dialogue and comparison across methodologies 🤝.
During the conference, Antonio Pecci, researcher within the PHOENIX-UASL project (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, University of Cádiz), presented the paper:“Digital Humanities for the use and enhancement of critical archaeological landscapes: the case of the fortified settlement of Piana San Giovanni (Salandra–Ferrandina, MT)”.

Landscape 7 confirmed itself as an important forum for discussing archaeological landscape research and integrated territorial analysis, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches, non-invasive methods, and digital tools for understanding long-term landscape transformations.

Beyond its scientific value, the conference also provided a valuable space for exchange and openness. Engaging with a wider academic community allows us to test ideas, methodologies, and interpretations in a broader comparative framework, fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue. This is particularly relevant for PHOENIX-UASL, where UAV-based LiDAR research on Phoenician-Punic landscapes benefits greatly from interaction with complementary theoretical and methodological perspectives.
