Herramientas de Traducción y Localización

🛠En el entorno freelancer, es muy recomendable conocer diferentes herramientas TAO (CAT Tools, para los amigos), ya que muchos clientes requieren que las traducciones se realicen con un determinado programa o en su plataforma específica.

🧰Cuando el cliente pide un programa concreto, la cosa se complica, porque las licencias no son precisamente baratas y el traductor freelance no puede costearlas todas. Algunas tienen versiones gratuitas o demos que se pueden usar, pero tarde o temprano, tendrás que hacerte con una licencia de Trados.

Digo Trados como podría decir cualquier otra. Todo depende de las preferencias del traductor. Salvando algunas peculiaridades específicas y un funcionamiento más o menos sofisticado, la mayoría de programas de traducción incluyen lo siguiente:
✅Capacidad para traducir diferentes formatos de archivos de origen.
✅Memoria de Traducción
✅Base de Datos Terminológica
✅Diversas utilidades para aumentar la productividad del traductor y la coherencia de la traducción

🎯Working remotely implies setting up a workspace at home. But it is not just about installing a laptop in a corner of the kitchen. In order to work effectively, you have to ensure the right conditions of space, lighting, temperature, connectivity and privacy.

💻Aside from the desk, chair and computer, your workspace needs to be pleasant. Make sure the temperature is comfortable and there is natural lighting.

🔇If you live with other people, it is important to tell them when they should not interrupt you so you can work without distractions. A “DO NOT DISTURB” sign can be very helpful, especially if there are children around.

🧮A home office is the ideal environment, especially at the beginning, when you are in the process of searching for clients and consolidating your workload. Not having to pay fixed expenses for rent, electricity, water, etc. for an independent place, is an important relief.

Once the initial giddiness overcomes, you need to get down to work.

Observe what time of the day you are most productive and determine a period when you can dedicate yourself completely to developing your activity and serving your customers.

One of the most common mistakes freelancers make when they start working is to price their services too low. If you are in doubt, reflect and establish a value that is fair for both you and your client.

Festín o Hambruna: La pesadilla del freelancer

🕸🍀La expresión "festín o hambruna" se usa para hablar de cualquier situación en la que haya una gran diferencia entre los períodos de abundancia y los de escasez. En el entorno freelance, nos referimos a periodos de festín o hambruna para describir aquellos ciclos en los que el trabajo nos desborda para pasar luego a la sequía más absoluta.

📈📉Este ciclo se repite muchas veces en nuestros negocios autónomos, sobre todo los enfocados a servicios y en especial durante los primeros meses o incluso años del negocio, porque son muchas las dificultades a las que se enfrentan los freelancers, especialmente cuando se trata de obtener un flujo de trabajo consistente.

🎯Si detectamos que nuestro negocio está pasando por este ciclo de forma periódica, no hay porqué alarmarse. Ya sabes lo que tienes que hacer para remediar la situación, porque ya lo has hecho antes. Hay algunos pasos, relativamente simples, que puedes seguir para asegurarte de pasar la mayor parte de tu tiempo en el ciclo de festín.

In translation and localization, Computer Aided Translation (CAT) is the use of software to help the professional translator in the translation process. The human translator creates the translation, while the software facilitates certain aspects of the process, helping the translator to work faster, with higher consistency and accuracy.

🔧CAT Tools involve a wide variety of software that simplifies the actual translation process. Most of the CAT tools have a very similar operation, although Trados stands out above all, in terms of functionality and features.

Except for some specific features and a more or less sophisticated operation, most of them include the following:
✅Ability to translate different source file formats in a single editing environment, without the translator having to use software associated with the file format
✅Translation Memory (TM)
✅Term Base (TB) or Glossary
✅Various utilities or processes that are integrated into the software and increase the translator’s productivity and the consistency of the translation

In the freelancer environment, it is highly recommended to know different CAT tools, since many clients require translations to be done with a certain software or on their specific platform. When it comes to a specific platform, they usually give the login credentials, with which the translator creates a user to work with a certain client.

When they ask for a specific program, things get complicated, because the licenses are not cheap and the freelance translator cannot afford all of them. Some have free versions or demos that can be used, but sooner or later, you will have to get a Trados license.
