How beautiful and romantic is the archaeology...right?

After more than 25 years excavating, I can say that there are unforgettable days and others that are many, in which you have to be very patient to understand the excavation we do.

We present a collection of the pieces that we have discovered throughout 2023 and that have been impressive artifacts that we can date between the 6th and 7th centuries AD.

The adventure and archaeological surprises will return soon in the 2024 session. Thank goodness there is little time left, how many days and hours to start again.

In the 2024 sessions we will continue to excavate this place to obtain more information. If you want to participate, follow our website www.archaeology.institute and sign up.

During the month of September 2023, during the excavation phase of the new early christian basilica, a fragment of Roman glass from the 6th - 7th centuries AD was discovered for the first time in Sanisera.

The piece corresponds to a small flat-based plate that must have been used during funeral or prayer rites in memory of the deceased. It was probably used to serve some type of food among those attending the cult.

Without a doubt, the most incredible and exciting thing was discovering that the plate bore a Latin cross inspired by Byzantine models of that time. It was incredible and spectacular for all of us who were present in that unique and unforgettable moment of the 2023 fieldschool. It will remain in our memory forever.

In the 2024 sessions we will continue to excavate this place to obtain more information. If you want to participate, follow our website archaeology.institute and sign up for course.

The excavation in the Roman port of Sanisera began with a great discovery and archaeological advance during the month of May’23.
A semicircular wall was discovered that corresponds to an apse. For many years the remains of this building could not be interpreted as a basilica. The apse is the most obvious evidence that serves the archaeologist to determine that we can interpret how in Sanisera there are already several cult buildings of the first Christians. It’s possibly a construction from the 6th century AD and from the pavements found in the altar area we know that this space was renovated in several periods.
We thank all the participants of our fieldschool who made this new historic find a reality.
In the 2024 sessions we will continue to excavate this place to obtain more information. If you want to participate, follow our website www.archaeology.institute and sign up for course 6.

During the month of June, one of our field school modalities was used on the Mediterranean coast of San Javier, (Murcia, Spain) focused on learning the software that every archaeologist should use in their excavation and laboratory work. It is essential to practice AutoCAD, ArcGIS and Photoshop by carrying out exercises that are common in our archaeological projects. In addition, drawing techniques were learned to prepare the plans of the excavated remains and the technical drawing of ceramics because it is the abundant material that is discovered. This activity was demonstrated thanks to a collaboration with the archaeologist Carmen Martinez, Manager of CMM Arqueologia, who has taught the course. After the success of the course and the excellent opinion of the students that they have obtained, we will repeat it again in 2023.

At the Sanisera 06 fieldschool held during the summer of 2021, our student, Michael, had the great fortune to discover one of the most unique pieces ever found at Sanisera.
It’s a fragment of an oil lamp. It’s a rare case because normally they only have a single mouth, and this piece would have at least between 8 and 12 holes to light.
Due to its characteristics, we know that it was produced in Tunisian territory, near Carthage, during the 6th century AD. It bears a stamped decoration in the form of a clover, a symbolic decoration that North African pottery workshops used during the 5th – 7th centuries.
This very particular lamp used to illuminate sacred interior spaces and Christian worship. Other similar lamps have been found in early Christian basilicas of Christian Tunisia.
We have not been able to discover more fragments of the same piece, however, having discovered it has given us a lot of information about the place we are excavating and gives us more encouragement to continue the future fieldwork from May 2022. If you want to participate, contact our organization.
