I used to hear Little M and Big Papa Hig say, “Maybe another day.”

Another day sounded wonderful. Better weather, less work, and apparently nobody needing to charge a phone. Strangely, we never seemed to get there.

Eventually, I stopped waiting for it. I enjoy the people while they’re here, the sun while it’s out, and the snacks before management starts using words like “enough.”

We’re alive.

It would be terribly rude not to make a bit of a scene.

This morning, Little M emerged for our walk looking as though she had lost a small but determined argument with the wind.

Her hair was piled on top of her head, sunglasses were hiding most of the evidence, and she was carrying a half-eaten apple like someone who had been removed from a wellness retreat for asking too many questions.

Then she asked why every photo from our walks is of me.

I looked at her. Then at the camera. Then back at her.

Some questions answer themselves.

I walk slightly ahead looking immaculate while members of the public stop to admire me. This gives Little M a few precious seconds to compose herself and pretend the hairstyle was intentional.

She says I steal the attention.

I prefer to think I provide cover.

I’m not just the main character. I’m witness protection.

People say dogs might be angels in disguise.
Now, I’m not saying I’m a heavenly being… but I have arrived in this house at exactly the right moment, healed morale with my face, guarded the premises from suspicious leaves, and loved my staff with the sort of commitment usually reserved for saints and lunatics.

I never ask Little M to explain herself.
I never ask Big Papa Higgs to have a better day.
I simply appear, stare into their souls, follow them to the bathroom, and sort the atmosphere out.

So yes, maybe dogs are angels in disguise.
Small, slightly scruffy angels with excellent hearing, no respect for personal space, and an unwavering gift for showing up exactly when you need them most.

Frankly, if that’s not divine intervention, I don’t know what is.

Little M once told someone she never feels unsafe when I’m with her.

I remember the moment clearly.

We were out walking when something rustled in the bushes.

She stopped.

I stopped.

The air went quiet.

My ears lifted.

Every instinct passed down through generations of fearless terriers came alive.

Then I ran.

Fast.

Focused.

Absolutely committed.

Little M watched proudly as her brave protector charged towards danger.

It was an empty crisp packet.

Still, I approached without hesitation.

Sniffed it thoroughly.

Confirmed there were no survivors.

And returned to Little M with the calm confidence of someone who had secured the entire area.

She thinks I protect her from criminals.

I mainly protect her from unattended food.

But she sleeps well, and that’s what matters.

It’s close, but not quite a Disney intro yet.

Right now it feels like a warm reflective caption. A proper Disney-style intro needs more storybook magic, a stronger sense that Teddy arrived and changed the course of the household, and one clear final wink.

This is closer:

There was once a household run by two very serious people.

Little M made plans.

Big Papa Hig made lists.

Together, they spent a remarkable amount of time discussing all the lovely things they would do someday.

Then one afternoon, I arrived.

Small.

Scruffy.

And completely uninterested in someday.

I wanted walks now.

Car rides now.

The beach now.

Snacks, ideally, five minutes ago.

At first, they thought they were looking after me.

But slowly, something changed.

They started taking the long road home.

Stopping to watch the sunset.

Getting in the water.

Laughing when plans went wrong.

And carrying me whenever I decided the adventure had become excessively physical.

Years later, they still tell people they rescued me.

I let them.

Every fairytale needs a little fiction.

This needs to read like Teddy is taking people back to that morning, not reporting what happened after the fact. Humanity did invent “immersive storytelling,” mostly so dog captions could become this demanding.

Use this:

This morning, the sky was grey and the wooden path seemed to go on forever.

Big Papa Hig kept walking ahead, calling back,

“Come on, Ted. Keep going.”

I stopped.

The wind was pushing at my ears.

The stones were rough beneath my paws.

And, frankly, I had already given the outdoors a very fair chance.

I looked back towards the car.

Warm seat.

Soft blanket.

No hills.

A strong proposal.

But Little M crouched down beside me and smiled.

“Just a little further.”

I know that phrase.

It usually means more walking and fewer snacks.

Still, I followed them.

Slowly at first.

Making sure everyone understood this was under protest.

Then the path opened.

The air changed.

I could smell the salt before I saw the water.

The beach stretched out below us, almost empty, with the sun breaking through the clouds and turning the sea gold.

I ran.

Straight into the waves.

For a few seconds, there was no long walk, no cold wind, no reason to complain.

Just the sea around my paws and the staff laughing behind me.

Big Papa Hig looked very pleased with himself.

I let him have the moment.

He had been right.

Which was lovely for him.

And deeply inconvenient for me.

Little M keeps saying positive thinking attracts positive things.

I wasn’t entirely convinced.

Then this morning she opened the fridge.

I thought,

“This is it.”

Nothing.

Disappointing.

So I stayed positive.

We went out for breakfast.

Still positive.

Then we drove to the beach.

Very positive.

Somebody scratched behind my ears.

Exceptionally positive.

By lunchtime, Little M gave my tummy a little pat.

“Who’s got a little pot belly?”

I almost laughed.

That’s not a pot belly.

That’s optimism.

Every time I hear the fridge…

Every crisp packet…

Every cheese wrapper…

I choose to believe life is about to get better.

Most days…

I’m right

I was told there are three antidepressants that don’t require a prescription.

First, dogs.

Correct.

Second, ocean views.

Acceptable.

Third, dogs with ocean views.

Finally, some proper medical research.

Although, between us, the ocean is doing very little.
