In 2020, the very first applications under the Withdrawal Agreement that required prior approval from the immigration office were submitted from early July onwards.

This information, therefore, applies to British citizens who became residents under the WA from 3rd July onwards, as it was already clear that those who held the green residency certificate would simply swap it directly.

The police have confirmed that renewing your TIE for a permanent one will be a straightforward exchange, following the same process and using the same documents as were required when exchanging the EU residency certificate for a TIE.

Please note: this must be done from the moment your current TIE expires, within the following three months. It cannot be done earlier, as the police system will not recognise you as a permanent resident before then.

If you’d like us to handle your renewal, please email us copies of your old TIE, passport, and most recent padrón so we can fit you in.

Please keep in mind that, given how appointments are currently released and the shortage of availability, we might not be able to fit you in at offices like Benidorm or Denia, and it may not be possible to book appointments for everyone together — although we will do our best.

In October 2024 (TBC), the European Union (EU) is expected introduce a new scheme that will affect non-EU citizens, including British nationals, entering an EU country for a short stay.
The scheme, called EU Entry/Exit System (EES), will register travellers via an automated system in the port or airport when they arrive in Spain. It will replace the current manual stamping of passports at the border.
British tourists will be required to provide their name, passport details, biometric data (fingerprints and captured facial images) as well as the date and place of entry and exit upon entering Spain.
These details will be held on file for three years, meaning Britons making repeat visits to Spain within a three-year period will not have to go through the same registration process each time.
To be exempt from EES registration, British residents in Spain will need to show a valid uniform-format biometric card, which in Spain is the TIE.
The British Embassy and the Spanish Government therefore strongly recommend that all British residents in Spain get the TIE before the EES comes into force to avoid disruption at the border.

*Driving licence update for UK licence holders living in Spain*

Following the Ambassador’s message last week we are pleased to let you know that yesterday the Spanish Government confirmed an extension of the current grace period for the recognition of UK driving licences (https://www.lamoncloa.gob.es/consejodeministros/referencias/Paginas/2022/refc20220222_corregidav02.aspx ). That means that those of you who were living in Spain before 1 January 2021 can continue to drive in Spain with your valid UK driving licence until 30 April 2022. If you moved to Spain after 1 January 2021, your licence will be recognised for six months from the date your obtained residence, or until 30 April 2022, whichever is later. For those of you who registered your intention to exchange your licence with the DGT before 30 December 2020, but have not yet done so, you have until 30 April to complete the process.

As the Ambassador said, negotiations are continuing and we are committed to reaching a long-term agreement with Spain to enable UK licence holders to exchange their licences without taking a test. However, we recognise that this two-month extension is not as long as we would have liked and does not resolve the ongoing uncertainty as negotiations continue. Therefore, if it is essential for you to drive, you may not want to wait for the outcome of the ongoing negotiations and you may decide to apply for a Spanish driving licence now. This involves taking both a practical and theory test. You can find out more about the process on the DGT site, where the information is also available in English: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/permisos-de-conducir/obtencion-renovacion-duplicados-permiso/permiso-conducir/index.shtml.

We will continue to keep you updated with the latest information on this page and at gov.uk/livinginspain, where you can sign up for alerts, so that you are notified of any changes.

This message only applies to UK Nationals living in Spain. Visitors can continue to use their UK licence to drive in Spain without the need for an International Driving Permit.

For those who already have a SIP card number, it's vital you update your phone number for being called for vaccination. Be aware the local hospitals don't call to UK lines so it's important you get a local phone/mobile
