The latest post from our Angola project. Angola's national bird!

There's a good reason why Red-crested Turaco (Tauraco erythrolophus) is on the logo of Birding Angola: it is perhaps THE bird that visiting birders most want to see, and it's easy to see why! For many folks, this is the last of the African turacos that they haven't yet seen. This beauty can be seen at many of the sites on the Angola Birding Route, including Kinjila, where trained local guides can help you find this species and all the other local specialties.

Many visiting birders naturally focus on endemic birds, but with a list of around 1000 species, Angola is incredibly rich in birds overall. A trip to the country will take in a broad cross-section of the continent's birds, from rainforest species of the Congo Basin forests to desert denizens of the Namibe. An example of a common and widespread yet delightful species found in Angola is the Cinnamon-breasted Bunting (Emberiza tahapisi). Along the birding route you can connect with this beauty at several sites, including Morro de Moco, Tundavala, and Mangueiras.

The "Pale-throated Barbet" is split from some authorities from the widespread Naked-faced Barbet (Gymnobucco calvus). If this split is accepted, Angola gains yet another endemic bird. This sociable barbet is usually seen perched up in small groups on dead trees at the forest edge. Regardless of whether it's officially split or not, this Angolan bird is obviously different from the other Naked-faced Barbets: much paler on the underparts; throat especially. On the birding route, it can be found at Kumbira, Tombingo, and Damengola.
