🤖✍️ Expatriator Q&A Series: Social Security Application for the Digital Nomad Visa

👋 Welcome to the Expatriator Q&A Series, where we demystify Spanish immigration law! Today's question:

"How can I apply for social security for the Digital Nomad Visa?"

🔎 A complex issue, but here's the breakdown:

💡 Usually, you can't register with the Spanish Social Security system until after you've arrived in Spain. However, for the DNV, you need to provide a Certificate of Social Security coverage from your home country or a commitment to register with the Spanish system upon arrival.

For employees, your employer should provide a letter stating their commitment to register you with the Spanish Social Security system once your DNV is approved. If you're self-employed, provide a written statement of your intent to register as an autónomo upon arrival.

💡 Spanish authorities understand that certain requirements can't be fulfilled until after you've arrived in Spain. A commitment to fulfill these requirements is typically accepted for the DNV application. However, it's always a good idea to consult with a gestor or immigration attorney. You can hire one here: https://bit.ly/DNV-gestor.

Thinking of staying in Spain and don’t need work authorization? There is a one year visa for volunteers!

https://www.inclusion.gob.es/web/migraciones/w/autorizacion-para-participacion-programa-voluntario

According to the information on the website of the Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, it is possible to obtain a residence permit for volunteering in Spain. This type of residence permit is known as "Autorización para participación en programa de voluntariado" (Authorization for participation in a volunteer program).

To obtain this residence permit, the applicant must have a host entity or organization that is recognized by the Spanish authorities and is willing to take them in as a volunteer. The applicant must also meet certain requirements, such as having health insurance coverage and not having a criminal record.

It is important to note that this type of residence permit is not a work permit, so the volunteer cannot receive any remuneration or salary for their activities. The permit is valid for a maximum of one year and can be renewed as long as the volunteer continues to meet the requirements.
