Great-Value Beers & Tapas in a Super-Convenient Central Madrid Spot 🍺
Located at Pl. de Celenque, 1, Centro, 28013 Madrid, just off Calle Arenal and a minute from Puerta del Sol, Cañas y Tapas is a dependable choice for foreigners looking for a relaxed drink and bite in the very centre of Madrid.
I first went there back in 2000, and the fact that the franchise has survived and thrived for over two decades says a lot. In a city where bars come and go quickly, that kind of longevity usually means consistent quality, fair pricing, and a formula that works.
The concept is simple and effective: traditional Spanish tapas and beer in a chain of taverns with marble tables and Andalusian tiles. The menu focuses on classic tapeo—croquettes, tortilla, cured meats, cheeses, and other small plates that go perfectly with a cold caña. Wine, spirits, and good coffee are also available, making it suitable for inexpensive breakfasts, from a quick drink to lunch or dinner, even for solo diners.
Despite its prime location, it remains great value for money. Prices are reasonable, portions are sensible, and service is efficient. The atmosphere is informal and relaxed, with table service, takeaway, delivery, free Wi-Fi, and wheelchair access. It is a handy place to use the toilet in central Madrid too so just having a drink to be able to do that makes sense.
Important note: unfortunately, like all of central Madrid, this area suffers from pickpocketing. Keep an eye on your bag and belongings, especially during busy periods.
With basic awareness, Cañas y Tapas remains a convenient, good-value stop—proof that sometimes the classics endure for a reason.
