Anything that serves to undermine a democracy allied with the West is on the table. In this sense, asymmetric, analog or digital warfare is felt more strongly. This transversality through criminality will be felt much more in the coming months.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated socioeconomic inequalities within and across countries. The policy responses designed to mitigate them in the form of either relief and recovery packages or welfare protections have mostly proved to be short-term fixes. In the long-term, however, the distributional consequences of the pandemic between and within countries, like during previous pandemics and recessions, are bound to widen inequality"

Mitigating inequality requires a mix of bottom-up and top-down changes that address the underlying social and economic systems. Here are insights and ideas.

"Accenture forecasts that the global GDP contribution of the communications, media and platforms sectors, which include traditional and digital-native media companies, will see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8% from 2019 to 2022, compared to a 0.5% CAGR across all industries. Despite this relatively strong anticipated growth, the industry is not insulated from the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. Monthly global household expenditure on media and entertainment in 2022 is predicted to be 30-40% less compared to 2019, while global advertising spending for 2020 is expected to decrease 8.1% from 2019 levels."

This report outlines long-term implications for the media ecosystem, including changes to industry structure, user experience, monetization and data practices. The report highlights six implications for the media and entertainment industry, each with a value map to illustrate major impacts for indus...

"

We are in the middle of a global health crisis that will have severe consequences for people around the world. What this pandemic has shown us in such a terrifying way is that we need to rebuild our economies, so they provide us with jobs and a society that is secure, resilient and safe. How can we minimize the harmful effects on the fight against climate change?

We have built our economies – our societies – in a way that too often ignores science and our dependence on the natural world. COVID-19 has infused a renewed confidence in science and appreciation of how vulnerable our economies are at a global level.

People do not want to be back here in another systemic crisis in 10 years’ time – whether the cause is a pandemic, climate change, biodiversity loss or inequality. People want society to be transformed in a way that’s more secure, more resilient – safer. We’re calling it the Great Transformation. What that means is "building back better." Stimulating sustainable growth – not decline. Stimulating resilience – not vulnerability".

When deciding on policies and stimulus measures to kickstart the global economy, policymakers should invest in the shipping industry's green transition.

"More than a third of the world is currently under some form of lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, with schools, workplaces and places of worship closed. As these shutdowns slow the spread of the virus, many are eagerly looking ahead to how these restrictions will soon be lifted. At today's World Health Organization (WHO) briefing, Michael J. Ryan, Chief Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, explained that a strategic "calibrated, step-wise approach" will be the safest and most effective way to ease these limitations. "

A strategic, 'step-wise' approach will be essential when lifting lockdowns safely, according to the WHO.

It is clear that the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak is disrupting manufacturing and global value chains, with consequences for businesses, consumers and the global economy. Many CEOs are scrambling to respond to urgent questions about how to protect their employees, ensure supply security, mitigate the financial impact, address reputational risks, and navigate market uncertainty, which is driving down demand.

The oubreak shows the need for companies to focus on preparedness and reponse to risk.

"Global economic growth is forecast to edge up to 2.5% in 2020 as investment and trade gradually recover from last year’s significant weakness but downward risks persist, the World Bank says in its January 2020 Global Economic Prospects" https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/press-release/2020/01/08/modest-pickup-in-2020-amid-mounting-debt-and-slowing-productivity-growth #

Global economic growth is forecast to edge up to a weaker-than-expected 2.5% in 2020 as investment and trade gradually recover from last year’s significant weakness but downward risks persist, the World Bank says.

"Decarbonization is changing the face of energy and the world economy in more ways than most consumers — and even most executives — appreciate. Besides the transition from molecule to electron, as this move toward electrification suggests, it is also shifting the industry’s economic base from West to East and reconfiguring the hierarchy of companies and geographies that define energy."

The global energy transition is being led by Asia. Here's what that will mean for the world's economy in a post-fossil fuel world.

"We are at a critical juncture where the next big wave of a migration crisis and civil unrest will be triggered by the climate crisis and climate insecurity. We are already seeing large swathes of instability in 2019 aggravated by a wide range of socio-economic issues. To learn from past trends – such as how a generational drought preceded the Syrian civil war or how social contracts built upon fuel subsidies resulted in the supply of basic public services going awry and preceded protests in Chile, Lebanon and Ecuador – we need to restructure global economic interdependence and take a long-term view on green and clean investments in public infrastructure and utilities to ensure socio-economic stability. We need to adopt a long-term view as a narrative".

Both developed and developing nations have a role to play in finding, funding and furthering the solutions to the climate crisis.

"Governments need to become fit-for-purpose in the digital era. Faced with the rising expectations of digital natives, they realize that business-as-usual is over. In Chile, for example, the current social malaise reflects frustrated aspirations of the new, yet vulnerable middle-class.

Bureaucracies are developing a greater appetite for new ways of thinking and doing. Progressive governments are pushing public agencies to be more tech-savvy and data-thirsty, willing to take risks and learning to adapt faster. In the past, governments tended to contract-out tech expertise to big-techs. They are now building-up their capacities to understand emerging technologies better and diversifying technology providers to avoid being locked into using certain vendors. They are creating central agencies to rationalize how they buy and deploy new technologies. Britain created its Government Digital Services in 2011 and has saved £3.56bn between 2012 and 2015. The United States and Sweden are the latest to follow course"

Technology is giving governments new tools to tackle corruption.
