From Rey Expat Advisors we can help with the vehicle registration process of vehicles coming from another country and having permanent or temporary foreign registration.

If the country of origin is a member country of the EU, it is not necessary to manage the Single Customs Document (Documento Único Aduanero -DUA-) , therefore it will not be necessary to pay import taxes at customs (Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria).

The steps to follow would be:

- obtaining the Ficha Técnica at ITV station, after vehicle inspection,
- paying IVTM tax in the corresponding administration according to address in Spain,
- paying the registration tax which depends on the technical characteristics of the vehicle,
- paying DGT fees (Dirección General de Tráfico),
requesting the new Spanish vehicle document (Permiso de Circulación), and
- printing the new Spanish registration plates.

If the country of origin is not a member country of the EU, a previous step to all the above will be necessary: to manage the Single Customs Document (Documento Único Aduanero) at customs and pay the corresponding import tax duty + VAT.

PROOF OF ADDRESS IN SPAIN
In order to register a car in Spain that has been purchased in another country, whether new or second-hand, it is necessary to prove address in Spain. It would be the same case when applying for driving license Exchange.
As the address can be a rented or owned property, the Dirección General de Tráfico accepts documentation as proof of address in both cases.
If the property is rented, the possible proofs are:
• Certificate of census registration, certificado de empadronamiento (issued by your local town hall less than 3 months ago)
• Copy of the current rental contract
If the property is owned, the possible proofs of address are:
• Certificate of census registration, certificado de empadronamiento (issued by your local town hall less than three months ago)
• Copy of the title deeds (all pages)
• Nota simple issued at the Land Registry, Registro de la Propiedad.
Depending on the town, getting the registration certificate can be reasonably quick or extremely slow. It can take several weeks to get the census certificate and you may lose precious time that you need to pass the MOT inspection on time and be able to apply for registration within the 60 day period required for the registration tax payment exemption for change of residence, if that is your case. So it may be advisable to go to the Land Registry to ask for a nota simple of your property.
If you do not own the property that is your home in Spain, then you can provide a copy of the current rental contract, as mentioned above.
The DGT DOES NOT ACCEPT bills from electricity, water, internet, etc. as proof of address in Spain. As a resume, they are only acceptable:
• certificate of census registration,
• nota simple,
• title deeds,
• rental contract.

General information to prevent confusion:

- What counts is where the licence is from, not the nationality of the holder.

- You need to be legally resident in order to be able to exchange it. A copy of your residencia card is required for the process. It is not enough with NIE and padrón.

- EU driving licences: you will have 2 years to exchange it after you become legal resident in Spain.

- UK driving licences: you will have to exchange it within 6 months of becoming legal resident in Spain.

- Other non EU licences from countries that Spain has an agreement with: also you will have 6 months to exchange them after becoming legal resident here.

- If you took your original driving licence test in a country that Spain does not have an agreement with and then exchange it for another one from a country with an agreement, the exchange is not possible. For example: you took your driving test in South Africa, and then exchange the licence for an UK one. You will not be able to get the Spanish licence without taking a new full driving test in Spain, as we do not have an agreement to exchange licences with South Africa.

- In any other cases, you will have to take the Spanish driving licence test. It is possible to do the theory part in English. You will need to contact your local driving school for more information.

- The Spanish international driving licence can only be obtained if you have a regular Spanish driving licence. The international permit always have to go with the normal licence.

Mil gracias por la magnífica noche vivida ayer con mis compañeros de la Escuela Municipal de Teatro de Manilva.
El estreno mundial y absoluto de mi primera obra teatral fue un auténtico éxito, con llenazo incluido.
La comedia ligera perfecta para disfrutar de una noche de verano, y reírse a carcajadas.
Sorprendida muy gratamente por las reacciones y los comentarios que me van llegando. Entre otros, que no se esperaban que una escritora novel hubiera hecho un texto con tanto ritmo, gracioso, y, sobre todo, con tantísimos personajes.
Es un sueño cumplido, desde luego. Para que luego digan que a partir de cierta edad ya no puede hacer uno cosas nuevas en esta vida.
Ojalá esta sea la primera de muchas obras que vea representada.
Ni siquiera la gastroenteritis que tengo me impidió subirme al escenario a darlo todo.
Especialmente mi enhorabuena a los debutantes en un escenario, lo hicisteis de 10.
Un beso enorme a todos: compañeros, directora, público, técnicos, y a pizzería el El Napiolitano por el festín final (aunque yo no lo pudiera disfrutar).

UK driving licence exchanges:

We would like to remind you that you can exchange your driving licence for the Spanish one, even if you have been resident in Spain for more than 6 months.
If you have been resident for more than 6 months in Spain you can exchange it, but you can not drive legally on your UK licence. If the police were to stop you, the minimum fine you will receive will be 500€.

You can also exchange your UK licence even if the plastic card is expired, as long as it was on date when you became resident in Spain, and that the licences at the back of your card are still on date.
