Expiration of NIE/ RESIDENCIA/ CERT: EMPADRONAMIENTO:
Firstly - is this the Green Residencia Certificate ? Or is this the White Nie Certificate ?
If it is indeed the Green one, it would be the Residencia Certificate, that carries the NIE number along with address, dob, parents' names, etc. When you are first issued this one, it should be valid for 5 years. In that case it carries a date. The second one, you receive when you renew after those 5 years have expired, should say "indefinitivo" - indefinitely, which is then valid for good.
If it is the white NIE certificate, that one is issued to you personally and will be the same for life - no matter if you leave Spain and come back later. AS od late, these are issued and have an expiration date of 3 months from the date of issuance. There are ways to work with that. You can get it renewed as many times as you wish or whenever you need that piece of paper.
If you are "stopped" with an invalid NIE - technically that is not possible, because once you have been issued a NIE it is the same for life. If you are employed, or self employed, your NIE does not expire - but in that case you should have a Residencia.
Lastly - there are the white Certificados de Empadronamiento - registration certificates from the local town hall where you live proving your address within that municipality. They are needed to apply for the Residencia and later on for resident discounts or your medical card. But they do not stand alone and are not valid as prove of your residency in Spain without the Residencia.
There are various models of the Cert. de Empadronamiento: for travels or various authorities, health card, etc. They should be valid for 6 months. Any more questions send me a message.
