Calculating monetary and non-monetary loss and damage of climate in Uganda

The Local Climate Adaptive Living (LoCAL) facility of the UN Capital Development Fund is supporting Uganda to promote climate change–resilient communities through climate finance to local government to increase resilient investments to extremely vulnerable target districts.

Together with the NDC - Partnership of Action the priority is assessing monetary and non-monetary loss and damage of climate change in Uganda.

The main focus is the calculation of the damage and loss due to climate change that is not being taking into account in the Climate Adaptation Strategy.

The team mobilized by Oiko Logica OIKO is developing a methodology to calculate the destructive impacts of climate change that cannot be or have not been avoided by mitigation or adaptation.

This innovative tool will provide guidance to the Ministry of Environment of Uganda to request funding to the forthcoming loss and damage Fund for Vulnerable Countries decided at COP 27 with a focus on local and vulnerable livelihoods.

🌍 Field Mission Complete! 🌲

Last week, we successfully completed the field mission for our assignment within the EU4Environment program. This initiative focuses on enhancing the capacity of communities in Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries, particularly in natural resource management (NRM) and forestry.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the dedicated team of experts and our invaluable local partners. In Georgia, we are especially grateful to RECC and Natia, who organized and accompanied us throughout the visit. A special thanks to the National Forestry Agency (NFA) for guiding our team through the stunning forests of Imereti – a region that will be the focus of our ecotourism development plans.

Excited for the next steps in contributing to sustainable ecotourism and community empowerment!

OIKO contributes to climate resilience in the Caribbean 🌎

The is already feeling the brunt of climate change. Low-lying coastal states are especially vulnerable. They must mitigate and adapt to rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and stronger, more frequent storms.

The United Nations categorizes these states as "ground zero for the global climate emergency” and seeks to align climate response with the scale and urgency of the crisis. One of the most important activities for climate change mitigation and adaptation is the development of a financing strategy. This is what the OIKO team has been working on. This month, we completed a project to develop an implementation plan and financing strategy for these Caribbean nations.

Thanks to the involvement of CARICOM: Caribbean Community, NDAs, and international experts from our working group, it was possible to identify key climate change adaptation measures.

⛰️ This week our team is conducting a risk and vulnerability assessment in the Parque Nacional Celaque Oficial in western . The OIKO and INCEBIO technical team, represented by Joe Ryan and Héctor Orlando Portillo Reyes, with the support of MAPANCE, is visiting three mountain indigenous communities of Malsincales, Rio Negro, and Chimis Montaña.

Experts are conducting community meetings and collecting information on areas of greatest impact from hurricanes Eta and Iota. Through these activities, the team is mapping the risks and threats that have affected and are still affecting the community.

The main purpose of this work is to raise public awareness of risks and build up capacity to tackle extreme weather events, such as landslides, and mitigate their impacts.

The project is funded by CTCN

What can I personally do to reduce my carbon footprint?

The concept of reducing one’s personal carbon footprint shifts the focus from those who are responsible for global climate change to those who are involuntarily contributing to it.

🚗 If you use cars with an internal combustion engine, you burn fuel. As a result, you are enlarging your carbon footprint. So then, what is the alternative? Not to drive...?

💡 On an individual level, stick to the three basic R rules: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Try to optimize your consumption reasonably. If you don't have to spend the energy, then don't. Create new little conscious habits on a daily basis.

That's all you can realistically do. But it's not a small thing if everyone does it.

create extraordinary ecosystems. They are found in 123 countries in the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific. But despite this wide geographic distribution, they represent less than 0.4% of the total global forest estate.

🌳 Mangrove forests are comprised of more than 20 species of evergreen trees. They grow on shorelines, and they support by serving as a valuable nursery for fish and crustaceans.

🌳 Mangroves sequester 10 times more carbon than boreal or tropical forest. One hectare of mangrove forest can store 3754 tons of carbon. To put it in perspective, that's as much carbon as 816 cars emit in a year.

🌳Unsung heroes of coastal defense, mangroves create a barrier between land and sea to withstand the impact of natural hazards such as storm surges and tsunamis. A 100-meter mangrove strip decreases wave heights up to 66%. A 500-meter strip can decrease wave height up to 99%.

🌳Mangroves provide valuable that contribute to human well-being. Mangroves contribute to well-being. They support food and livelihood security for many coastal communities.

Endowed with the superpower of living in salt water, mangroves cannot resist human impact. It’s estimated that more than three-quarters of the world's mangroves are threatened by coastal overexploitation, deforestation, and pollution.

Paraguay is a country of countless natural resources and vast biodiversity of flora and fauna. The Guaraní Aquifer System, the largest underground reservoir of freshwater in the world, is located beneath the surface of . Despite this, the country constantly faces challenges with access to safe and potable water due to the lack of efficient integrated water resources management.

🚨 In addition, the situation is worsening due to domestic, industrial, and agricultural ; the public's misconception of the inexhaustibility of water resources; and the lack of current data.

Our technical assistance project resulted in a Concept Note validated by the United Nations Climate Technology Centre & Network (CTCN) to obtain funds to execute a technology plan for Paraguay's water resources sector.

🌎 The plan will be implemented by deploying 150 monitoring stations and platforms, digitizing water quality information, and raising public awareness of water-related challenges and solutions. This program will address water resources management at the national and regional levels.
