This project had one extra challenge: the roof layout didn't allow for a standard mounting solution. So we built one from scratch.

Our team designed and welded a custom steel supporting structure, measured precisely for this property - ensuring the panels are mounted at the optimal angle for maximum solar production, and built to last the full lifespan of the system.

Way 1: Self-consumption (the big one)
Every kilowatt-hour your panels generate during the day, which your home uses directly, is a kilowatt-hour you don't buy from the grid. In Spain, residential electricity rates typically range from €0.18 to €0.28/kWh depending on your tariff and time of use. So every kWh you self-consume saves you that amount - immediately, every day.

This saving is invisible on your electricity bill. Your bill will show what you consumed from the grid and what you exported - but it won't tell you what your solar system offset. This is why monitoring matters: without it, many homeowners underestimate what they're saving.

Way 2: Export compensation (compensación de excedentes)
Any electricity your system produces that your home doesn't use in real time is exported to the grid. In Spain, your electricity supplier credits you for this at a rate typically between €0.07–0.12/kWh - lower than what you pay to consume, but still a meaningful reduction on your bill.

📊 "How much will my panels actually generate?" It's the first question most homeowners ask - and the answer depends on more factors than most installers will tell you upfront.

Let's break it down properly.

The starting point is your location's "peak sun hours" - a figure that represents the average daily solar energy available at your specific latitude and climate. For the Costa Blanca region, this figure sits around 4.5–5.0 peak sun hours per day annually. For comparison, London gets around 2.5–3.0 and Berlin around 3.0–3.5. This is one reason why going solar in southern Spain makes such strong financial sense.

A simple working formula:
System size (kW) × peak sun hours = daily kWh output

So for Torrevieja:
🔹 3 kW system: ~13–15 kWh/day average
🔹 6 kW system: ~27–30 kWh/day average
🔹 8 kW system: ~36–40 kWh/day average

But "average" means exactly that - it varies throughout the year:
☀️ July average: 7+ peak sun hours → a 6 kW system produces 40+ kWh/day

When you invest in solar, you're not just buying panels. You're buying a complete system - and the quality of every component affects how well it performs over its 20–25 year lifespan.

1.⁠ ⁠Solar Panels
The panels absorb sunlight and generate DC electricity. Panel quality varies enormously. Key things to look for: efficiency rating (how much electricity per square metre), temperature coefficient (how well they handle heat), and warranty terms - typically 25–30 years for output, 10–15 years for product.

2.⁠ ⁠Inverter
Converts DC electricity from the panels into the AC electricity your home uses. This is arguably the most critical component - and the one most likely to need replacing during the system's lifetime (typically after 10–15 years). A good inverter also provides real-time monitoring so you can track your system's performance from your phone.

3.⁠ ⁠Battery Storage (optional but increasingly popular)
Stores surplus solar energy for use at night or during outages. Battery capacity is measured in kWh. A 10 kWh battery is enough to power an average home through a typical evening and night. Without a battery, surplus energy goes to the grid; with one, it stays in your home.

⚡ kW or kWh - most people use them interchangeably. They're not the same thing, and the difference has a direct impact on how you understand your electricity bill and your solar system.

This is one of the most common sources of confusion we encounter - so let's clear it up properly.

Power (kW) = how fast electricity is being generated or consumed right now.
Think of it like the speed of a car. At any given moment, your kettle might be drawing 2 kW. Your air conditioning unit: 1.5–3 kW. Your solar system at midday on a clear day: 6 kW (if that's its rated size).

Energy (kWh) = how much electricity has been generated or consumed over a period of time.
Think of it like the distance your car has travelled. If your kettle runs for 30 minutes (0.5 hours) at 2 kW, it uses 1 kWh of energy. That's what appears on your electricity bill.

So when we say a "6 kW solar system" - that's its peak power output in ideal conditions. But what you actually benefit from is the energy it produces over the course of a day.

Here's how to estimate daily output for the Costa Blanca:
👉 System size (kW) × 4.5 = approximate daily kWh output

🔹 3 kW system → ~13–14 kWh/day
🔹 6 kW system → ~27–28 kWh/day
