AWS hitting the 20-year mark says less about one vendor and more about how much the software delivery model has matured.

A lot of early cloud work was simple lift-and-shift. Useful, but limited. Today the expectation is very different: automated deployments, resilient services, observability, managed infrastructure, and platforms that are ready for data-heavy and AI-powered features in production.

That’s the real shift. Cloud is no longer the headline. It’s the foundation teams build on when they modernise properly.

Java 26 dropped today with 10 JEPs worth knowing about. ☕

The practical highlights: HTTP/3 client support is in, G1 GC throughput is up 5-15% with no config changes needed, and lazy constants (previously called stable values) land as a clean way to handle expensive one-time initialisations.

Structured concurrency gets another preview iteration, and there's groundwork for Project Valhalla — value types are getting closer.

Oh, and the Applet API is officially removed. It has been deprecated since Java 9. Nobody will miss it.

AWS has quietly launched Strands Labs, a new open-source GitHub org for experimental AI agent projects. 🤖

Three things in the initial drop: Robots (connecting agents to physical hardware), Robots Sim (physics-based simulation for testing), and AI Functions — a Python/TypeScript decorator that lets you describe what a function should do and have the AI figure out the implementation.

All built on the Strands Agents SDK. Still experimental, but AWS does not usually invest in open tooling without a longer-term platform play behind it.

If your team is exploring AI automation or agentic workflows, worth keeping an eye on this one.

15% more transactions. 20% less compute. Same JVM.

Azul Prime just demonstrated what many of us suspect but rarely prove: runtime optimization can deliver better ROI than adding more servers.

A global payments platform processing millions of transactions daily switched to Azul Prime and saw immediate gains. Not marginal improvements—real capacity increase with lower infrastructure spend.

This matters because most shops scale out first. Add more EC2 instances. Spin up another Kubernetes node. Increase RDS capacity. It works, but it's expensive and it doesn't address the root inefficiency.

JVM tuning is harder. Requires profiling, heap analysis, GC log archaeology. But the payoff, when you find it, compounds. Every transaction benefits. Every peak hour runs smoother. Every cost forecast drops.

The question for architects and leads: are you measuring JVM performance as rigorously as you measure database queries or API latency? Or are you assuming the JVM is "good enough" and scaling horizontally by default?

If you're running high-throughput Java services (payments, trading, real-time analytics), this Azul case study is worth reading. Even if you don't switch runtimes, it's a reminder that the JVM layer still has headroom.

Are AI workloads pushing your cloud costs through the roof?

Java developers are responding to this challenge by making a strategic shift: moving away from traditional Oracle JVM distributions to high-performance alternatives that deliver better throughput and lower latency — exactly what production AI deployments need.

This isn't just about saving on licensing fees

New tutorial: Add passkey authentication to your Grails application 🔑

Your users can sign in with a fingerprint, face scan, PIN, or security
key instead of typing a password — and your existing login flow stays
untouched.

Your users are still typing passwords. In 2026, that is both a security liability and a UX failure. Here is how to add passkey authentication to an existing Grails application with minimal changes to your current login flow. What you’ll learn: How WebAuthn and passkeys work under the hood, configu...

Spring AI is maturing fast. The latest development that caught our eye: integrating Spring AI with external MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers. This means your Java apps can now leverage AI while staying connected to the tools you already depend on—GitHub, SonarQube, Docker, whatever.

Here's why this matters: Rather than forcing teams to choose between "adopt AI or keep your existing stack," MCP lets you add intelligent capabilities to Spring Boot apps that work with your infrastructure, not against it. You get LLM context about code quality, deployments, or repositories without rebuilding your workflows.

If you're building Spring Boot applications and wondering how AI fits into your roadmap, this approach is worth exploring. It's practical, tool-aware, and keeps the complexity where it belongs—in the LLM, not in your application plumbing.

New on the Tucanoo blog — the HTMX + Spring Boot production guide that goes beyond "Hello World."

Every HTMX tutorial on the internet shows you the basics. Click a button, swap a div, done.

But then you need to:
- Update two different parts of the page from one request
- Make Spring Security's CSRF protection work with HTMX
- Handle what happens when a user's session expires mid-click
- Show loading spinners, debounce search inputs, manage browser history

That's where the tutorials stop and the real work begins.

We wrote the guide that covers all of it — with a full working GitHub example you can clone and run in 60 seconds.

Read it here: https://tucanoo.com/htmx-with-spring-boot-and-thymeleaf-a-production-grade-guide-beyond-the-to-do-app/

Stop wrestling with React build pipelines. Your Spring Boot backend can deliver SPA-like responsiveness with 14 KB of JavaScript and zero npm dependencies. What you’ll learn: Fragment rendering with , Out-of-Band swaps with FragmentsRendering, CSRF token integration with Spring Security,...
