AWS hitting the 20-year mark says less about one vendor and more about how much the software delivery model has matured.

A lot of early cloud work was simple lift-and-shift. Useful, but limited. Today the expectation is very different: automated deployments, resilient services, observability, managed infrastructure, and platforms that are ready for data-heavy and AI-powered features in production.

That’s the real shift. Cloud is no longer the headline. It’s the foundation teams build on when they modernise properly.

Java 26 dropped today with 10 JEPs worth knowing about. ☕

The practical highlights: HTTP/3 client support is in, G1 GC throughput is up 5-15% with no config changes needed, and lazy constants (previously called stable values) land as a clean way to handle expensive one-time initialisations.

Structured concurrency gets another preview iteration, and there's groundwork for Project Valhalla — value types are getting closer.

Oh, and the Applet API is officially removed. It has been deprecated since Java 9. Nobody will miss it.

AWS has quietly launched Strands Labs, a new open-source GitHub org for experimental AI agent projects. 🤖

Three things in the initial drop: Robots (connecting agents to physical hardware), Robots Sim (physics-based simulation for testing), and AI Functions — a Python/TypeScript decorator that lets you describe what a function should do and have the AI figure out the implementation.

All built on the Strands Agents SDK. Still experimental, but AWS does not usually invest in open tooling without a longer-term platform play behind it.

Azul Prime just demonstrated what many of us suspect but rarely prove: runtime optimization can deliver better ROI than adding more servers.

A global payments platform processing millions of transactions daily switched to Azul Prime and saw immediate gains. Not marginal improvements—real capacity increase with lower infrastructure spend.

This matters because most shops scale out first. Add more EC2 instances. Spin up another Kubernetes node. Increase RDS capacity. It works, but it's expensive and it doesn't address the root inefficiency.

JVM tuning is harder. Requires profiling, heap analysis, GC log archaeology. But the payoff, when you find it, compounds. Every transaction benefits. Every peak hour runs smoother. Every cost forecast drops.

The question for architects and leads: are you measuring JVM performance as rigorously as you measure database queries or API latency? Or are you assuming the JVM is "good enough" and scaling horizontally by default?
