Tuesday evening, September 29, the MARCO in Vigo hosted the fourth Gala VigoEmprende, and LiveGalicia was there for the second year in a row. We know the program from the inside, because we’re one of the projects it has accompanied.

Since June 2020 it has registered 1,401 projects, supported 1,579 people and held 7,277 advisory sessions. This year’s overall winner was Tegra, and the prizes in the other categories went to Mia Creativa, Idearia Soluciones, Las coordenadas de Vigo and RodriDesign, with plenty of strong finalists beside them.

We keep going back because the room shows what entrepreneurship with purpose looks like in practice. In 2025 all of the net growth in Galicia’s self-employment registrations came from people of foreign origin, yet the gala coverage doesn’t say how many of the founders VigoEmprende accompanies are newcomers. Dorothée Müller , who leads partnerships for LiveGalicia, went to Vertical Summit at the Palacio de la Oliva in Vigo on September 25 expecting to network. She came home with a candle from the goodie bag and a surprisingly good grasp of the sardine’s role in Galician history. More than 200 people and about 150 companies were in the building, and the terrace stayed open all day so that people could simply stand around and talk.

One talk reframed the whole morning for her. In Galicia, the number of foreign self-employed people keeps growing, and that growth is what stops the overall number of self-employed from shrinking. Hearing newcomers described as a contribution rather than a problem landed personally for someone who is a foreigner and self-employed here herself. Feliz Fiesta Nacional to everyone celebrating today!

October 12 is Spain’s national holiday, and for those of us who arrived from elsewhere or came back, it’s a fitting day to pause and be grateful. This country has given us a home, a place to start businesses and raise families, and a daily life built on conversation and good food. If you’re marking the day with a long lunch, a parade or a quiet afternoon, we hope it’s a lovely one.

We’d also like to be honest that the date means different things to different people. October 12 marks the 1492 landing that began the colonization of the Americas, and for Indigenous peoples and many in Latin America it’s a day of mourning more than celebration. Galicia has its own relationship with that history, since so many Galicians emigrated across the Atlantic, often out of necessity, and its own national day is July 25. Holding gratitude and complexity at the same table is part of building a life somewhere with open eyes.

Whatever today looks like for you, we hope it’s a good one.

Vigo woke up on September 10 to new signage in the old town and along the harbor front, and its low emission zone is now technically active.

The Concello has given everyone a year of grace before fines begin, until September 10, 2027, which is real and useful as long as people hear about it. The rollout in Vigo came without the kind of public notice campaign other Galician cities had, and that matters most for anyone who arrived recently, drives an imported or secondhand car, and has fewer people to ask whether the car qualifies.

There’s something special about women with different stories, backgrounds and roots coming together around a table. ❤️

Our Vigo Woman Brunch Bunch is intentionally small, creating space for real conversations, genuine connections and getting to know one another.

We’re so grateful to the women who show up and bring their full selves to the table. Starting a life somewhere new isn’t always easy, and sometimes finding your people starts with a brunch.
