One of the great Ethiopian authors and statesman of this century, Haddis Alemayehu was born on his day, October 17. If he had been alive, he would have turned 99 today

Born in the Debre Markos district of Gojam province on October 17 1010, Haddis grew up with his mother,Desta Alemu, as his father, Alemayehu Solomon, worked away from home as priest and took another wife. He had begun school in traditional poetry which went up to the level of Zema-chants at home under his maternal grandfather. He then proceeded to Debre Gennet Elyas, thence to Debrework and finally to Dima Giorgis where he graduated in qene.Haddis then attended several schools in Addis Ababa, including the Swedish Mission School(1925-1927), Teferi Mekonen School, and Ecole Imperial Menelik II.

He wrote his first play during this period, “Ye Abesha en ye wedewhula gabcha” (The Marriage of Habesha and the Backward) which displayed remarakably mature style.It tells about the marriage of the woman Ethiopia(Habesha) and her children by her husband, the Backward One.Her children think only of thier own pleasure, not about Ethiopia’s well-being, and therefore the glory and greatness of Ethiopia suffer and decay; she becomes poor and ill, she gets an eye disease so that she canot see well, and she lives in misery.Ethiopia tells her son and dughters that it is thier attitude that has led her tp present misfortune.Then Haile Selassie, her latest son, is born, and he changes the state of affairs;he leads the famikly to prosperity and well being, and his mother Ethiopia gets proper treatment and gets well again, and her eyesight is restored.

The play was written for a school performance, but staged in the Majestic Hotel in Addis Ababa.He also composed the songs for the play.

This and another play, staged at Crown Prince Asfaw Wosen Haile Selassie’s wedding in May 1932, made him noticed by many prominent personas, including the newly crowned Emperoe Haile Selass

ጥር ፲፪ ቀን፣ በኢትዮጵያ ዘመን አቆጣጠር የዓመቱ ፻፴፪ ኛው ዕለት ሲሆን ፲፯ ኛው የበጋ ቀን ነው። ከዚህ ዕለት በኋላ እስከ ዓመቱ መጨረሻ ድረስ፣ በዘመነ ዮሐንስ ፪፻፴፬ ዕለታት ሲቀሩ፤ በዘመነ ማቴዎስ፤ ማርቆስ እና ሉቃስ ደግሞ ፪፻፴፫ ዕለታት ይቀራሉ።

ጥምቀት
በወርሃ ጥር የሚከበር ሃይማኖታዊ በዓል

የጥምቀት በዓል በክርስትና ኃይማኖት ተከታዮች በተለይም የኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ተዋሕዶ ቤተ ክርስቲያን፣ ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ በ፴ ዓ/ም በፈለገ ዮርዳኖስ በመጥምቁ ዮሐንስ እጅ በዮርዳኖስ ባሕር የተጠመቀበትን ዕለት የሚያስታውሰው፣ ኤጲፋንያ በመባልም የሚታወቀው ደማቅ በዓል ነው። መገለጥ፣ መታየት ማለት ነው። የኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ ጥምቀት ታሪክ የሚገኘው በማቴዎስ ወንጌል ምዕራፍ ፫ ቁ ፲፫–፲፯ ውስጥ ነው።

መጥምቀ መለኮት ቅዱስ ዮሐንስ መድኃኒታችን ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስን ሲያጠምቀው ::

በአገራችን፣ ጥር ፲ ቀን፣ በከተራ፣ በገጠር ወራጅ ውሃ የሚከተርበት፣ ታቦታት ከየአቢያተ ክርስቲያናቱ በዓሉ ወደሚከበርበት ቦታ በምዕመናን ታጅበው እየዘመሩ ይሄዳሉ። እዚያም በየተዘጋጀው ድንኳን እንዲያርፉ ተደርጎ ሌሊቱን እዛው ያሳልፋሉ።በከተሞች ግን ሰው ሰራሽ ግድብ ይሰራል።

ጥር ፲፩ ቀን የጥምቀት ዕለት፤ በገጠር፣ ጎኅ ሲቀድ ምእመናን እዚያው በድንኳኑ ዙሪያ አስቀድሰው ሲጨርሱ በካህናት መሪነት ሁሉም ወደከተራው ያመራና ውሃውም ተባርኮ ሕዝቡ ይረጫል። የክርስትና ስማቸውንም የረሱ ወደካህናቱ ይቀርቡና አዲስ የክርስትና ስም ይቀበላሉ። «ተጠምቀ ሰማያዊ በእደ መሬታዊ፤ ሰማያዊው በመሬታዊው እጅ ተጠመቀ» የሚለው የዕለቱ ቀለም በሊቃውንቱ አንደበት በያሬዳዊ ዜማ ጎልቶ ይሰማል። ከዚህ ሥነ ሥርዓት በኋላ በመቋሚያ፣ በከበሮና በጽናፅል በሚታጀብ ኃይማኖታዊ ዝማሬና ዘፈን፣ ወንዱ በሆታ፤ ሴቱ በእልልታ፤ ካህኑ በሃሌታ ታቦተ ሕጉን አጅበው፣ እንደያመጣጣቸው ወደየ ቤተክርሲያናቸው ይመለሳሉ።

አጃቢው ሕዝብ ከሚያዜሟቸው፦

«እዩት ወሮ ሲመለስ
መድኃኔ ዓለም በፈረስ ወሮ ሲመለስ፤
የሚካኤል አንበሳ
ሎሌው ሲያገሳ።
ማር ይፈሳል ጠጅ
በእመቤቴ ደጅ ።»

እያሉ ምእመናኑ የታቦት ዘፈኑንም ያዘልቁታል።

ታቦተ ሕጉም ቅጽር ግቢው ሲደርስ ሁሉም ምኞታቸውን በፍሡሕ ገጽ እንዲህ እያሉ ይገልጻሉ።

«በሕይወት ግባ በዕልልታ
የዚህ ኹሉ አለኝታ
በሕይወት ግቢ እምዬ
እንድበላ ፈትዬ
ሲያምር ዋለ ሲታይ
የኹላችን ሲሳይ»

በየዓመቱ በመላ ኢትዮጵያ የሚከበረው የጥምቀት በዓል፣ ታቦታት ከመንበራቸው ወጥተው፣ በየጥምቀተ ባሕሩ የሚከበሩ በመኾናቸው፣ ሀገሬውን ብቻ ሳይሆን ዓለም አቀፋዊ መስህብ በመፍጠሩ፣ ቱሪስቶችን መሳቡ አልቀረም። ጥቁርና ነጭ፣ ቀይና ብጫ ያለም ዘር፣ ከአዲስ አበባ እስከ ላሊበላ፣ ከአክሱም እስከ ጎንደር በሁሉም ሥፍራዎች በዚሁ ዓይነት ደምቆ ይከበራል። የምእመናኑም ሆነ የካህናትና ዲያቆናት አለባበስ ፍፁም በሚማርክ ባህላዊ አልባሳት የተዋበ በመሆኑ ከውጭም ሆነ ከአገር ውስጥ ለሚመጡ ጎብኚዎች ሁል ጊዜ አዲስ ነው።

ሊቃውንቱ እንደሚናገሩት፣ ዘመነ አስተርእዮ የሚባለው፣ ከጥር ፲፩ ቀን ጀምሮ እስከ ጾመ ነነዌ (ጥር ፲፯ ቀን) ያለው ጊዜ ነው። በዚህ ጊዜ ውስጥ አምላክ ሰው ሆኖ በሥጋ መገለጡ፣ በዮርዳኖስ በተጠመቀ ጊዜ የአንድነትና የሦስትነት ምሥጢር መታወቁ፣ በቃና ዘገሊላ በተደረገው ሠርግ ላይ የመጀመሪያው ተዐምር በመፈጸሙ፣ አምላካዊ ኃይሉ መገለጡ፣ እየታሰበ ምስጋና ይቀርባል። ይህ ሁነት ኢትዮጵያ ብሂልን ከባህል ጋር አዛምዳ ከሌላው የክርስቲያን ዓለም በተለየ አከባበር በዓሉን ማክበሯ፣ አያሌ ቱሪስቶችን ለመሳብ አስችሏታል።
