=====GDP VS GNP=====

1. Definition

GDP: The total value of all goods and services produced within a country’s borders in a specific period (usually a year), regardless of who owns the production resources.

GNP: The total value of all goods and services produced by the nation’s citizens (nationals), whether located inside the country or abroad, during a specific period.

2. Scope

GDP measures production by location.

GNP measures production by ownership.

3. Formula

GDP = C + I + G + (X – M)

C = Consumption

I = Investment

G = Government spending

(X – M) = Exports – Imports

GNP = GDP + Net Factor Income from Abroad (income earned by nationals abroad – income earned by foreigners in the country)

4. Example

If a U.S. company produces cars in Germany:

It adds to U.S. GNP (because the company is American).

It does not add to U.S. GDP (because production is outside U.S. borders).

If a Japanese company produces cars in the U.S.:

It adds to U.S. GDP (production happens inside the U.S.).

It does not add to U.S. GNP (profits belong to Japan).

5. Usefulness

GDP → Better indicator of a country’s domestic economic performance.

GNP → Better indicator of the income earned by citizens of a country.

✅ In short:

GDP = Location-based

GNP = Ownership-based

Economic Growth vs Economic Development 👇

1. Definition

Economic Growth:
An increase in a country’s output of goods and services (usually measured by GDP or GNP).

Economic Development:
A broader improvement in the standard of living, including income, health, education, infrastructure, and equality.

2. Focus Economic Growth: Quantity (how much a country produces). Economic Development: Quality (how people’s lives improve). 3. Measurement Growth: Measured by GDP, GNP, or per capita income. Development: Measured by HDI (Human Development Index), literacy rate, life expectancy, poverty rate, healthcare access, etc. 4. Scope Growth: Narrow concept (just economic output). Development: Wide concept (economic + social + human progress). 5. Example If Ethiopia’s GDP rises by 6% → this is Economic Growth. If at the same time, literacy increases, healthcare improves, poverty reduces, and infrastructure expands, then it is Economic Development. 6. Key Difference Growth = Increase in wealth. Development = Better life with that wealth.

👉 In short:

Economic Growth = “Getting richer.” Economic Development = “Living better.”

GDP vs GNP 👇

1. Definition

GDP (Gross Domestic Product):
The total market value of all final goods and services produced within a country’s borders, regardless of who owns the production factors (citizens or foreigners).

GNP (Gross National Product):
The total market value of all final goods and services produced by the nation’s citizens (nationals), regardless of whether production takes place inside or outside the country.

2. Key Difference GDP = Location-based (focuses on production inside the country). GNP = Ownership-based (focuses on production by the country’s people, wherever they are). 3. Formula

GDP = C + I + G + (X – M)
Where C = Consumption, I = Investment, G = Government spending, X = Exports, M = Imports

GNP = GDP + Net Factor Income from Abroad (NFIA)
NFIA = Income earned by citizens abroad – Income earned by foreigners inside the country

4. Example

If a Japanese company operates in Ethiopia:

The value of production in Ethiopia counts in Ethiopia’s GDP (because it happens inside Ethiopia). But it counts in Japan’s GNP (because the company belongs to Japanese nationals).

If an Ethiopian engineer works in the USA and sends income home:

His salary is part of Ethiopia’s GNP (since he is Ethiopian). But it is part of USA’s GDP (since the work was done inside USA). 5. Usefulness GDP: Shows the economic performance within a country’s borders → often used to measure economic growth. GNP: Shows the income of a nation’s citizens → useful for understanding national wealth from ownership.

🔑 In short:

GDP = Where production happens. GNP = Who produces it.
