At COP26, global leaders took a key step to recognize the potential of Indigenous Peoples as essential allies in the fight against climate change. Large commitments were made to support efforts to secure, strengthen and defend Indigenous Peoples’ and local communities’ (IPLCs) rights to their lands and forests.

Holding global leaders accountable to their commitments will be necessary. Securing IPLC rights is not only essential for halting deforestation and biodiversity loss, but also necessary for equitable and sustainable nature-based solutions and ecological restoration initiatives, which were another core area of focus at COP26.

At COP26, global leaders took a key step to recognize the potential of Indigenous Peoples as essential allies in the fight against climate change.

The first few days of COP26 in Glasgow have seen world leaders announcing a raft of new pledges and commitments, including several focused specifically on reducing deforestation, securing Indigenous Peoples and Local Community forest tenure rights, and scaling up investments in nature-based climate solutions such as restoration and sustainable forestry. Will these pledges and commitments be effective in realizing significant changes to forest conservation and management?

China’s Grand Carbon Neutrality Pledge

China has announced that its carbon emissions should peak by 2030 and then decline, to reach carbon neutrality by 2060. This strategic decision demonstrates China’s determination to pursue green and low-carbon development.

Indufor Strengthens Carbon Services

As part of our development of broader sustainability strategies, which encompass the role of sustainable forestry in carbon sequestration and storage, and the scope for increased use of renewable resources to replace fossil fuels and emissions-intensive construction materials, we have recently recruited two new specialists to the international group:

Arttu Pienimäki is a forest expert experienced in afforestation, plantation and boreal silviculture and carbon stock assessments. He joins the Indufor team with a background of several years working for an afforestation project in East Africa Africa and looks forward to working with Indufor’s clients on carbon-related issues.

Haley Stauffer is a bio-renewable systems professional with experience in economic assessments for biomass supply chains, life cycle assessments, carbon footprinting, and bioeconomy market research. She has worked with experts at the U.S. Department of Energy on analyses of bioenergy supply chains and is excited to contribute to Indufor’s work in the forest-based bioeconomy.

Indufor Asia Pacific releases satellite monitoring tools in New Zealand to support regional authorities and environmental monitoring efforts. The tool uses images updated every five days and analytics to allow users to visualise and track changes in vegetation cover. This approach moves away from traditional static snapshots and promotes near real-time monitoring solutions for a variety of applications.
