On the World Bee Day its good to remember that although the honeybee gets a lot of well-deserved attention, it’s just one piece of a much bigger picture.

There are over 20,000 species of wild bees worldwide, many of them specialising on doing pollination work that honeybees simply can’t. These bees don’t produce honey or live in sophisticated societies but their humble contribution is what keeps ecosystems flourishing.

Today we want to introduce our two new colleagues who will be residing in our managed wild bee hotels, providing pollination service and collecting biodiversity data from the environment.

On the left is the Red Mason Bee (Osmia bicornis) who seals it’s nesting tubes with actual clay and is many times more efficient pollinator than the honeybee.

On the right, still shy in its cocoons, are the Willowherb Leafcutter Bees (Megachile lapponica) who are fantastic interior decorators as they line their nesting holes with perfectly cut pieces of leafs that provide a cozy home to hibernate in during the winter months.

Who is your favourite wild bee character? 🐝

2025 was serious beesness, amazing new partnerships and exciting experiments! A big bow of thank you to all the people who have been part of this journey and see you soon for another year of good things and sweet stuff 🐝🍯🌱

Last summer we worked with to turn a metro entrance into a 30-square-metre modular meadow complete with wildflowers, bumblebee nests and homes for local wild bees 🌱🐝🌸

The location was strategically chosen to supplement an observed gap in a green corridor so that the meadow would provide passing bees a pitstop for refueling, resting and nesting📍

Pollen collected by the bumblebees was analysed for biodiversity data (eDNA) to inform future planting choices for optimizing the meadow to better meet the needs of the local pollinator populations 🧬

Impact in a nutshell:

🌼 Food and resting place for pollinators

🐝 Pollination service for the local flowers

🧬 Biodiversity data to measure the meadow’s impact and improve future iterations

🌱 Nature contact and delightful moments for people passing by

🏙️ Building better shared habitats for both bees and the people

The bears got their share of delicious honeycomb from our bees and now you can have a taste too! 🐻🍯
On sunday 7.12. from 10:30-12:00 you can find our bee-kiosk at the entrance building of Zoo where you can learn about bees, taste the honey and buy some sweet souvenirs from the zoo shop 🐝

It was a pleasure to work with on the conceptualization of a new labeling system that communicates both our impact and the unique terroir of each batch of ultra-local urban honey our bees produce 👌

🌿🐝 We are humbled by the honour of being the beekeepers of zoo, where our bees are conducting biodiversity monitoring and entertaining the visitors — but most importantly producing delicious ultralocal honey for the bears living next door! 🍯🐻🍯

🚃 In a first of its kind collaboration our bees are monitoring the environmental effects of the new tram line construction site of /

🐝 We installed two bee towers to accommodate our bumblebee and mason bee research assistants who will be collecting environmental DNA (eDNA) samples on site over the period of three years.

🧬 The pollen and nectar samples are analyzed by our partner to accumulate longitudinal multi-site data that helps us understand local biodiversity and follow changes to vegetation. The data will later inform the development of better habitats for both bees and the people.

On a more philosophical note — we are delighted to see how the native bees are engaged as active contributors rather than passive sufferers in a large scale infrastructure development project.

We are buzzed about our new partnership with Antilooppi , one of the largest owners of office space in Helsinki region and a definitive forerunner in sustainable real-estate 🌱🐝

Four of their office buildings will serve as a homebase for our winged sustainability specialists whose summer work consists of providing pollination service to the local nature and collecting eDNA samples to support research in urban biodiversity 🧬🌸

🐝 Today is the World Bee Day 🐝
In addition to honeybees, other pollinators such as bumblebees and butterflies are vital for ecosystems and food production 🌍

As much as 75% of the world’s crops depend, at least partially, on insect pollination. While honeybees are important pollinators, they cannot replace the pollination services provided by wild pollinators – this is why maintaining habitats for wild pollinators is so crucial

How can you help?

🌻 If you have a garden, plant nectar-rich flowers that bloom from spring to autumn and build a bee hotel

🌳 Participate in restoring pollinator habitats through community projects

📢 Share information about the importance of pollinators and inspire others to support them

We (and nature) need pollinators to thrive 💛

🐝 Tänään on maailman mehiläispäivä 🐝
Tarhamehiläisten lisäksi monet muutkin pölyttäjät, kuten kimalaiset ja perhoset, ovat elintärkeitä ekosysteemeille ja ruoantuotannolle 🌍

Jopa 75 % maailman viljelykasveista on ainakin osittain riippuvaisia hyönteispölytyksestä.

Me (ja luonto) tarvitsemme pölyttäjiä 💛
