Ordinary Me Series: The Desire to Be Appreciated
One of the deepest desires of the human heart is the desire to be appreciated. We may not always admit it, but there is something within each of us that longs to be seen, valued, and acknowledged.
Think about it. A single harsh comment can stay in our minds for days. We replay the words over and over, wondering why they were said and what we could have done differently. Yet a sincere compliment, a simple "thank you," or a word of encouragement can brighten our entire day. It can give us the strength to keep going when we are tired and remind us that our efforts matter.
The truth is that appreciation is not a sign of weakness. It is a basic human need. Whether we are parents, spouses, employees, business owners, students, or volunteers, we all want to know that what we do has value. We want to feel that our sacrifices are noticed and our contributions make a difference.
Sadly, we often underestimate the power of our words. We are quick to point out mistakes but slow to acknowledge effort. We notice what people failed to do while overlooking all they have done. As a result, many people walk around carrying silent burdens, wondering if anyone sees their struggles or appreciates their sacrifices.
Imagine how different our homes, workplaces, churches, and communities would be if we made appreciation a daily habit. A husband thanking his wife. A wife acknowledging her husband's efforts. Parents encouraging their children. Friends celebrating one another's progress. Leaders recognizing the people who serve alongside them. These simple acts cost nothing, yet they have the power to heal hearts and strengthen relationships.
At the same time, we must learn not to depend entirely on the approval of others. There will be seasons when our efforts go unnoticed and our sacrifices unrecognized. During those moments, we should remember that our worth is not determined by the applause of people. Sometimes the most meaningful things we do are seen only by God.
Today, take a moment to appreciate someone. Send a message, make a call, or speak a kind word. You never know how much that person may need it. And if you are feeling unappreciated, do not lose heart.
Your kindness, your hard work, and your perseverance matter more than you realize.
Sometimes, the words that seem small to us become the very words that give someone else the courage to keep going.
Ordinary Me Reflection:
People may forget many things we say, but they rarely forget how our words made them feel. Be generous with appreciation—it may be the gift someone needs today. ❤️
