Every icon on your desktop is a passive cognitive load. You're paying attention tax on it even when you're not looking at it.

Research on visual clutter shows irrelevant objects in your environment compete for attention constantly. A cluttered desktop is a cluttered mind, not a metaphor, an actual measurable effect on working memory.

Four changes: empty the desktop permanently, use wallpaper as a state signal per work mode, auto-hide the Dock and menu bar, and work full screen with one app visible at a time.

Your screen is an environment. Design it like one.

Willpower is not a focus strategy. It is what you use when you have no strategy.
Every time you rely on it to avoid distraction, you're spending a finite resource. By mid-afternoon it's gone. The people who seem to have exceptional focus don't have more willpower. They built environments where distraction isn't reachable.
Four things that replace willpower with design: remove access instead of resisting, make focus the default environment, write the implementation intention the night before, and track the streak so consistency becomes the motivation.

Work doesn't end when you close the laptop. Not without a deliberate signal.
If you don't have a shutdown ritual, your brain treats the workday as permanently open. You're technically off but still processing. That's not rest. It's damage accumulating quietly in the background.
Four things that actually close the day: write tomorrow's first task before you close the screen, say something or do something physical to mark the end, hold the line after the signal with no exceptions, and clear the screen completely so your environment confirms what your body is trying to believe.

Your Mac opens the same way whether you're about to write for three hours or clear your inbox for thirty minutes. That's a design failure.
Different work needs different environments. Writing needs silence and one app. Client calls need a clean setup and your camera framing sorted. Admin can be open and noisy. Most people have four or five distinct modes running through the same undifferentiated setup.
Name your modes. Assign apps to each one. Make the screen look different per context. And make the switch take one keystroke.

Every time you switch tasks, your brain spends up to 23 minutes reloading the previous context when you come back.
Do that five times a day and you've lost two hours to switching costs before you've done anything difficult. The fix isn't working harder. It's fewer switches, better separated.
Four rules: name every context and give it an environment, finish the unit before you leave, make the transition physical and deliberate, and cap yourself at two contexts per day. A third is almost always a switching cost pretending to be productivity.

Every open tab is a decision you haven't made.
A browser with 30 tabs isn't a research tool. It's anxiety made visible. Each one is a task you didn't finish or an intention you didn't act on.
Four changes that fix it: one window per context, new tab shows nothing, block sites by session not app, and capture instead of tab. The triage is simple once you see it.
Close everything you're not using right now. That's the first rep.
