What does a mine look like underground?

Come with us to Björka Mineral, part of Nordkalk, for a short trip underground in Sala, Sweden.

It’s a world most of us rarely get to see. The daylight disappears, the tunnels open up and suddenly you get a very different sense of the scale of mining.

Here’s a glimpse of the tunnels, machinery and working environment behind Björka’s dolomite production.

And underground, as everywhere in our operations, safety comes first.

From above, the limestone quarry and the surrounding forests are what first catch your eye at Vimpeli. But one of the site’s most interesting features is found much closer to the ground.

Nordkalk has two mines and a grinding plant in Vimpeli. A team of four produces limestone and limestone powders, mainly for agricultural use.

The limestone-rich soil also provides a habitat for a variety of plant species. Rare flowers growing in the mining area include field gentian (Gentianella campestris) and broad-leaved helleborine (Epipactis helleborine). In cooperation with environmental authorities, Nordkalk has relocated and planted these species in new habitats.

Industrial limestone extraction and grinding began in Vimpeli in 1949, although the first limestone deposits in the area were discovered as early as the 1850s.

There’s a new machine at Storugns on Gotland, Sweden.

Meet TRITON, our new Komatsu PC950LC-11 excavator. It replaces DINO II, the Komatsu PC1250-7 previously used at the site.

And there is an important difference: TRITON's fuel consumption is approximately 24 litres per hour lower than that of the previous machine.

Sometimes it takes a visitor to notice the view.

This summer morning in Pargas caught the eye of one of our colleagues visiting from Nordkalk’s Lappeenranta site. And luckily, he stopped to take a photo.

For many people in Pargas, our lime plant across the water is a familiar part of the landscape. But seen through someone else’s eyes, even a familiar view can be worth another look.

Small team. Plenty happening.

Three people work at Nordkalk’s Vampula site, which includes three limestone quarries and a grinding plant. Limestone and limestone powder are produced mainly for agriculture, and the plant uses biofuel from nearby Vampulan Biotehdas Oy. Wind turbines belonging to an external operator stand on a hill formed from wall rock. Nordkalk has operated in Vampula since 1983.

How much can one limestone site make possible? Quite a lot, actually.

At Nordkalk Tytyri in Lohja, around 50 people produce limestone products for construction, environmental applications and the chemical industry.

The site also contributes locally in very practical ways. Groundwater from the mine is supplied to the town of Lohja, and waste heat from the lime kiln is used in the municipal heating network.

Add an underground Tytyri Experience and KONE’s high-rise elevator test laboratory, and you begin to see just how many different stories one site can hold.

Most days, an assembly point is simply a sign people walk past.

Then something happens, and suddenly everyone needs to know exactly where it is.

This image was taken last year during the filming of our new Finnish safety videos. The scene shows employees gathering at the designated assembly point after an evacuation.

Going to the correct place is not just about following instructions. It allows us to check that everyone has left the area safely and that no one is missing.

A good emergency routine should feel almost boring because everyone already knows what to do.
