Singing = music + words.

This seems evident. But how many percent of each? I would say 50/50. Of course, one cannot really separate them from each other; they belong together. They were composed together. In the music lies also the content of the words; in the words lies also music. They are meant to be in harmony with each other. They are not competitors, nor is one of them merely a nice-to-have decoration.

For many years, I have worked as a translator and language teacher and sung as a hobby (secretly wishing to become a singer). Now, I combine the experiences of both in my work as a language coach for singers. While listening to concerts and opera performances, I witness often a gap between the musical quality on the one side and the language quality on the other. Sometimes the gap is small, sometimes it is very big. I would like to help to overcome this gap. My experience in trying to become a singer helps me to understand the challenges singers are facing, and a deep appreciation for their talent and daily work forms the base of my cooperation with them. I would like to encourage them not to accept this gap and to work steadily on improving their pronunciation and understanding of the texts they are singing.

Since 2018, I’ve had the honour and great pleasure to work as a language coach in German language productions at the Finnish National Opera and in French language productions of the Sibelius Academy’s Opera master’s programme. I’ve had the privilege to work privately with numerous singers and to coach master class students in Savonlinna. My love for my languages and for music motivates me to steadily improve my skills in this field so that I can hopefully contribute to beautiful harmony on stage.
