LAKEBA PINE - Proceeds from the much-anticipated harvest of over 450,000 cubic metres of pine in Lakeba in the next few weeks, are expected to rebuild Lakeba's Ratu Mara College and get students back to Wainiyabia for the institution's technical college.
This is one of Lakeba's most important plan as far as education in Lau, and the college campus is planned to support local trades such as carpentry and agriculture) utilizing surrounding resources like the Lakeba pine plantation. There will also be construction of tsbles, desks and chairs as harvest proceeds.
The statement was made by Lakeba Nexus Holdings Ltd's director Aisake Taito. Speaking on Radio Fiji's vernacular radio, Mr Taito says Ratu Mara College will attract back students from that part of Lau to take up carpentry, joinery and associated curriculum.
On the dot for this bright plan is Na Gone Turaga na Tui Nayau, Sau ni Vanua, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, and the Board of Lakeba Nexus, of which he is Chairman.
Lakeba Nexus is partnering with the Ratu Kamisese Mara Education Trust and Fiji National University to revive the technical college.
The institution is designed to function not only as a high school but also as a hub for vocational skills training.
Ratu Mara College, a secondary and vocational educational institution, is going to undergo a major revitalization to benefit the youth of the Lau islands, especially with proceeds from a major pine harvest by the Fiji Pine through Tropik Wood Industries in collaboration with Fiji Pine Trust.
The institution originally operated as a technical school serving the maritime region. Following a period of closure that impacted the educational and employment opportunities for local youth, the Fijian Government and educational stakeholders initiated steps to reopen and modernize the campus.
The Lakeba Pine Scheme, established in 1968, is Fiji’s oldest community-owned pine project. Spanning nearly 450,000 cubic meters across the island, a historic commercial harvest will soon get underway under the management of Lakeba Nexus Holdings and Tropik Wood Industries Ltd.
For some background information, the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara turned 70 and gifted at least $72,000 in monetary gifts from close friends and family for the formation of the Ratu Mara College,” one of his daughters Adi Koila Nailatikau had said in June of 2022.

IT'S SMOKE TIME - because it's getting dry and windy, the company's fire officers have started visiting communities close to all our pine stations to discuss fire prevention.
This is a critical part of the work at Fiji Pine and taking the lead are our Bua Station fire officers who went to Korokadi this week.
Bua Pine Station's Silviculture & Forest Protection Officer, Watekini Taga, reports that the area is a "hot spot" for fires in Bua.
"We've been doing our fire awareness in the area in the last four days" Mr Taga says.
Wildfires and agricultural burns frequently threaten Fiji Pine Limited plantations across Fiji's forest divisions, including the key stations located in Bua. Because uncontrolled burns have historically caused extensive damage, the company aggressively enforces mitigation strategies such as firebreaks and watchtowers to protect its plantations. While the dry weather has increased the threat of bushfires across the Western and Northern divisions, the National Fire Authority (NFA) actively conducts rural and urban fire safety campaigns to mitigate risks. Fiji Pine Ltd and the Ministry of Forestry understandably do strict monitoring on plantations in Bua. They highly advise surrounding communities to prevent uncontrolled burns.
If you see smoke or fire, report it immediately to our pine stations' officers-in-charge, or call the National Fire Authority's toll-free emergency number 910. Also know that permits to light a match near pine forests are required of everyone. Farmers and residents must adhere to controlled burning regulations and fire bans, especially during hot, dry, and windy conditions. If you are a nearby landowner or farmer, please let us know if you want to start a fire...ENDS

FIJI PINE GROUP acknowledges with deep respect the life of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna as our nation commemorates today, a special holiday, to honour his life. We acknowledge his wisdom when he worked with the colonial administration of the time, to create a land system that continues to this day. We the indigenous people of Fiji, today enjoy the system which allows us to lease our land to earn an income. It works with LOUs at Fiji Pine.
"Our reflections continue on how the great statesman’s vision for land governance, leadership, and national development also remains deeply relevant across the Pacific," says Dr Joeli Varo, Head of Discipline for Land Management and Development, at USP).
"This national public holiday provides an important opportunity to reflect on how Ratu Sir Josefa Lalabalavu Vanayaliyali Sukuna’s foundational principles continue to shape academic research, policy development, and land governance across the region today."
Born in Bau in 1888, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna was shaped from an early age by a strong sense of leadership and service to his people. A member of the esteemed Tui Kaba clan, one of Fiji’s most influential chiefly lineages, he carried with him the values, responsibilities, and traditions of the vanua throughout his life.
His educational journey began at Wairuku Primary School in Rakiraki, before continuing at Wanganui Collegiate School in New Zealand. He later pursued higher studies at Wadham College, Oxford, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree and was regarded as the first iTaukei to receive a university degree...(excerpts by Fiji Pine Media and Dr Varo).
