✅ Only female mosquitoes bite, as they require blood to develop their eggs.
✅ Mosquitoes are considered the world's deadliest animals due to the diseases they transmit.
✅ They locate their hosts by detecting carbon dioxide (CO₂), body heat, and sweat.

🚨 Health Risks Associated with Mosquitoes The Aedes aegypti mosquito is a known vector for serious diseases, including: • Dengue Fever
• Zika Virus
• Malaria
• Yellow Fever

Swarming season is here ‼️‼️

AST SWARMING SEASON IS HERE!

Public Advisory by the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji - BAF

Did you know?
September to November marks the peak swarming season for the Asian Subterranean Termite (AST) in Fiji.

During this period, winged termites leave established colonies to form new ones, increasing the risk of AST spreading to new areas.

Be on the lookout for:
🔸 Flying termites around lights and buildings
🔸 Discarded wings on windowsills and doorways
🔸 Mud tubes on walls, trees and structures

If you notice signs of AST:
✅ Take a photo if it is safe to do so
✅ Report the sighting to the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji
✅ Avoid disturbing or spreading infested materials
✅ Help protect homes, infrastructure and the environment

Report AST sightings to:

• Lautoka: 5996
• Labasa: 5993

Early detection and reporting are important in helping authorities identify infestations and limit the further spread of Asian Subterranean Termites.

🐛 FLiCK Friday Facts: The Romanian Millipede! 🐛

This week's pest spotlight shines on the fascinating yet often misunderstood Romanian Millipede.

Did you know?

✅ Despite their name, millipedes do not have 1,000 legs. Most species have fewer than 200.
✅ When threatened, they curl into a tight spiral to protect themselves from predators.
✅ Unlike centipedes, millipedes have two pairs of legs per body segment.

While millipedes do not bite or sting and are not known to spread diseases, large infestations can become a nuisance around homes and businesses. They may carry bacteria on their exoskeletons and some species release defensive fluids that can cause mild skin irritation and temporary staining.

🌧️ Millipedes are commonly found in damp environments and may invade buildings in large numbers during wet weather or when searching for shelter.

German cockroaches are among the most challenging pests to control because they reproduce rapidly and are experts at hiding in the smallest cracks and crevices. A single female can produce 300+ offspring in her lifetime, allowing infestations to grow quickly if left untreated.

🚨 Why are they a concern? ✅ They contaminate food and food preparation surfaces with harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella.
✅ They can trigger severe allergies and asthma attacks, especially in homes, schools, healthcare facilities, and food establishments.
