Historic Alliance Supports Vanua Indigenous-Led Regenerative Tourism and Food Systems in Fiji
SUVA, FIJI – In a landmark move for regenerative development across the Pacific, Regenerative Vanua (RV) and the Viti Indigenous Tourism Alliance (VITA) have signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This strategic alliance establishes an indigenous-led blueprint designed to transform Fiji's visitor economy into an engine of cultural preservation, ecological restoration, and community resilience.
Rooted in the sacred philosophy of the Vanua - the interconnectedness of land, ocean, culture, and people - the partnership moves beyond conventional development models to actively restore ecosystems and revitalize local economies. The collaboration focuses on five high-impact pillars across Fiji and the broader Pacific:
Regenerative Tourism & Agri-Tourism
Developing immersive travel experiences that actively heal local relationships within the Vanua and support the regeneration of ecosystems and strengthening of rural livelihoods.
Regenerative Gastronomy & Food Systems
Restoring indigenous agricultural practices to secure local food sovereignty and integrate native crops into the culinary landscape.
Regenerative Value Chains & Enterprise Development
Establishing commercial networks and market access owned, managed, and directed by indigenous custodians.
Regenerative Verification Systems
Instituting an authentic, culturally grounded verification program that measures the strenghening of relationships within the Vanua and validates genuine stewardship and cultural integrity.
Community-Led Stewardship & Governance
Honoring Vanua governance models and traditional knowledge systems as the foundation for modern regional development.
This strategic coalition anchors the implementation of the VITA Action Plan 2024-2030, establishing a framework to support indigenous enterprise and regenerative development.
"This alliance arrives at a pivotal moment in our mission to mobilize our resource owners," stated Mr. Sitiveni Leseitoga Nawaqa, President of VITA.
"Through our strategic framework, we aim to inspire our 248 Vanua indigenous resource owner communities, 1,390 Yavusa (tribes), 5,280 Mataqali (clans), and 9,979 Tokatoka (sub-clans) to become direct drivers of Fiji's economic growth.
We must channel our efforts into empowering our Vanua custodians as the bedrock of our nation's prosperity. This partnership accelerates our vision to weave ancestral knowledge and community stewardship into transformative experiences for our vulagi (guests), enriching their holistic wellbeing while directly regenerating the land they visit."
By synchronizing traditional Vanua governance with modern market mechanisms, the RV-VITA alliance reclaims economic sovereignty for local resource owners. International and domestic travelers alike will participate in a living model of tourism, one where every journey directly supports watershed protection, soil regeneration, biodiversity enhancement, and cultural continuity across Fiji's islands.
