๐ Communities taking action: Majuro and Palau achieve Tsunami Ready recognition
Majuro Atoll (Republic of the Marshall Islands) and the Republic of Palau have been officially recognized as Tsunami Ready under the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCOโs Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme. Both communities were approved in late 2024, with certificates of recognition presented earlier this year.
Situated in the Pacific โRing of Fire,โ these Small Island Developing States live with high tsunami risk due to their seismic surroundings, lowโlying coastlines, and reliance on ocean-based livelihoods. Building preparedness is essential to protecting people, ecosystems, and vital infrastructure.
To receive Tsunami Ready status, communities must meet 12 internationally agreed indicators, covering:
๐ต Tsunami hazard assessment
๐ต Effective warning and communication systems
๐ต Evacuation planning
๐ต Community awareness and education
๐ต Regular drills and exercises
In the Pacific, implementation is supported by the International Tsunami Information Center (ITIC), operating under IOC with support from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), providing technical guidance and capacity development to national authorities and communities.
Majuro and Palauโs achievement reflects long-term national commitment and strong community engagement to strengthen early warning systems and ensure that tsunami alerts can quickly turn into lifeโsaving action. Their progress offers an inspiring example for other coastal communities across the region.
