Last week we attended the Quarter 2 Meeting of the Technical Working Group on Human Mobility. During the meeting, SFC Director, Krishneil Narayan, shared about the need for more health impact focus as we look at climate-induced displacement and human mobility in the region.

Any partners willing to do more in the and nexus of climate and Loss & Damage in the Pacific region are most welcome to reach out to us at SFC.

Update from Director Krishneil Narayan:
"I had the pleasure of speaking today at the inaugural Climate Catalytic Fund (CCF) Symposium in Suva, convened by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Fiji’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

Representing Sustainable Future Consultancy, it was a significant moment to see the Risk Index for Climate Displacement (RICD)—which we are proud to be a co-design partner for—being used to drive practical investment in the provinces of Ba and Macuata.

In my intervention, I shared several critical shifts needed for the CCF’s success:
➡️ “Smarter” Money vs. More Money: I highlighted that the provinces don't just need an influx of capital; they need investment that is strategically directed toward Catchment-Wide solutions rather than isolated projects.

➡️ Closing the Inclusion Gap: I noted that while the focus on iTaukei communities is essential, the views of Indo-Fijians (freehold landowners, farmers, and native lease holders) are often missing from climate interventions. We must include these perspectives to ensure comprehensive land stewardship.

➡️ The Private Sector Bridge: I addressed the current gap in private sector engagement and suggested concrete ways to better involve local businessesto ensure economic resilience.

➡️ Long-term Stewardship: I emphasized the indispensable roles of women, children, and youth as the primary stewards of nature-based solutions.

The Climate Catalytic Fund is a new blended finance mechanism designed to translate climate risk data into locally led, practical action for communities facing climate displacement.

It was an honor to contribute the perspective of Sustainable Future Consultancy to this dialogue. We remain committed to ensuring that data-driven tools lead to equitable, community-centered outcomes."

As one of the co-creation partners for the RIDC, we are working on science-backed solutions to address climate mobility challenges in Asia and the Pacific region with pilot countries Fiji, Vanuatu, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

The event brought together government officials, policymakers, the private sector, technical experts, and 30 scientists from around Asia and the Pacific region with the goal of helping vulnerable areas adapt and reduce the chances of people being forced to move due to climate impacts. The forum spotlighted the new Climate Catalytic Fund (CCF), which aims to help find solutions to climate displacement. The CCF will be guided by insights from the next generation of climate displacement risks forecasting through the RICD, which helps predict hotspots prone to displacement risk.

Sustainable Future Consultancy (SFC) is a co-creation partner for RICD and is represented by Director and Principal Consultant Krishneil Narayan. Also in attendance from the Pacific region were representatives of the Fiji Government, the Vanuatu Government, partners from the Pacific Islands Forum, IOM, Platform for Disaster Displacement, and the Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council.

The event featured:
1️⃣ Expert presentations and panel discussions.
2️⃣ Launch of the first results of CMIL’s Risk Index for Climate Displacement (RICD), a groundbreaking risk tool combining advanced geo-spatial risk analysis and community perspectives and insights.
3️⃣ Presentation of CMIL’s new Climate Catalytic Fund (CCF), an innovative climate finance mechanism supporting community-led climate change adaptation
4️⃣ Technical co-creation workshop with 30 scientists and experts from 14 universities and other organisations collaborating on the development and implementation of RICD.

The CMIL and RICD work is led by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Asia Pacific Office in Bangkok.

The Climate Mobility Symposium began this week in Bangkok, spotlighting the Climate Catalytic Fund (CCF)—a new initiative supporting communities at high risk of climate-related displacement. The goal is to help vulnerable areas adapt and reduce the chances of people being forced to move due to climate impacts.

Solutions will be co-created with pilot countries - Fiji, Vanuatu, the Phillipines, and Indonesia. The CCF will be guided by insights from the next generation of climate displacement risks forecasting the Risk Index for Climate Displacement (RICD), which helps predict hotspots prone to displacement risk.

Sustainable Future Consultancy (SFC) is a co-creation partner for RICD and is being represented by our Director and Principal Consultant, Mr. Krishneil Narayan. Also in attendance are representatives of the Fiji Government 🇫🇯, Vanuatu Government 🇻🇺, and partners from Pacific Islands Forum, IOM Fiji, Platform for Disaster Displacement, and the Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council.

Last week in Suva, Fiji, Mr. Krishneil Narayan, Director and Principal Consultant of Sustainable Future Consultancy (SFC), participated in a regional consultation on the Draft Implementation Plan for the Pacific Regional Framework on Climate Mobility (PRFCM). He had the opportunity to contribute to the discussions on collaborative regional initiatives to address climate mobility in the Pacific. Mr. Narayan is the lead consultant for SFC on this crucial issue.

The two-day gathering aimed to bring together government officials, civil society representatives, CROP agencies, and development partners across the Pacific region to develop solutions for climate-induced mobility, focusing on rights-based and people-centred approaches.

The PRFCM, endorsed by Pacific leaders in 2023, represents a significant and unprecedented commitment to ensuring options, agency, and dignity for Pacific peoples facing the impacts of climate change.

This initiative is being advanced through the Pacific Climate Change Migration and Human Security (PCCM-HS) Programme, led by IOM - UN Migration, in partnership with PIFS, UNESCAP, UNHCHR, and ILO. It is funded by the New Zealand government and guided by a Joint Working Group co-chaired by Fiji and Tuvalu.

The insights and outcomes from this consultation will shape the final Implementation Plan, which will be presented to the Pacific Islands Forum FOC Sub-Committee on Regional Security in July 2025.

🌍 Honored to Speak at Fiji’s 1st Ministerial Forum on Gender Equality and Empowerment of All Women and Girls 🌍

At the invitation of Fiji's Minister of Women, I had the opportunity to join a panel on climate change. I shared insights on integrating gender and climate impacts beyond policy launches, ensuring these considerations permeate across all sectors. Additionally, I outlined critical gaps that need addressing to achieve gender and climate resilience. Happy to contribute through my work as part of Sustainable Future Consultancy.

This session was part of the inaugural Ministerial Forum on Gender Equality and Empowerment of All Women and Girls, organized by the Fiji Government's Ministry of Women on September 26, 2024.
